U.S. to Continue Baring Canadians from Crossing Border Through August 21st

Canada Has Said ‘Yes’ To Americans Crossing Starting August 9th, While U.S. Continues to Say ‘No’ to Canadians

Buffalo, New York area Democratic U.S. Congressman Brian Higgins

“While the United States does nothing, loved ones (from Canada) remain separated and communities whose economies rely on the cross-border exchange continue to suffer economically. Continuation of this shutdown is illogical.”                                     – Brian Higgins,  U.S. Democratic Congressman representing people in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls, New York area

A Statement by Buffalo, New York-Area Congressman Brian Higgins in Response to U.S. Extension of Border Restrictions between the United States and Canada

Posted July 21st, 2021 on Niagara At Large

Uncle Sam continues to tell “non-essential” Canadian travellers to stay out of the United States.

Infuriated by today’s (July 21st, 2021) announcement<https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2021-15573.pdf> that the United States government will extend restrictions on non-essential travel at the border between the United States and Canada for another month, (Buffalo, New York area) Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) released the following statement:

“For months now people and businesses along the border have been strung along month after month holding out hope for the border to reopen. Today’s decision by the Biden administration harms economic recovery and hurts families all across America’s northern border; this is completely unnecessary.

“While the United States does nothing, loved ones remain separated and communities whose economies rely on the cross-border exchange continue to suffer economically. Continuation of this shutdown is illogical given the success of vaccines and counterproductive putting the United States at a disadvantage given Canada’s decision to welcome back vaccinated Americans effective August 9th.”

Higgins spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives<https://youtu.be/03cjOePoWag> this week urging the United States to act to reopen the border saying in part, “It is time for the United States to align its Northern Border policy with its science.”

The Congressman who co-leads the Northern Border Caucus and Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Group welcomed action announced by the Canadian Government yesterday saying in a statement<https://youtu.be/03cjOePoWag> there is “no excuse” for the failure by the United States to give a lifting of restrictions at the Northern Border the attention it deserves.

A Brief Footnote from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large –

Here are two quick questions.

America’s continued message to most Canadians wanting to cross a border bridge.

First, we have yet to hear from governments on either side of the border what is the difference between a fully vaccinated American and a fully vaccinated Canadian. Can someone in government enlighten us on that one?

Second, how come for many months end it has been a Buffalo, New York area Congressman speaking out for the interests and concerns of citizens on both sides of the border. Where are our federal representatives on the Niagara, Ontario side? Are they waiting for talking points from their Party Leaders before clearing their throats on this issue?

With the recent increase in COVID cases in the United States, most iof which have been dentified with the Delta variant, Canada should reconsider the decision to open the border.
