You Are Invited to a Public Meeting on Plans to Dump “Fill” at Port Colborne Quarries

A Citizens Group is Raising Concerns that the plan could lead to contaminating groundwater in Port Colborne and Surrounding Communities

Niagara At Large is posting the following notice from a Port Colborne area citizens group about a public meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, June 11th starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Brebeuf Hall on 300 Killaly St., East in Port Colborne.

The company proposing to deposit what it insists will be “clean fill” in open pits off Highway 140 is Port Colborne Quarries’ owner, Rankin Construction, that has arguably had a long-time record of being one of the better or best companies of its kind around when it comes to carrying out its operations in a responsible manner.

And in this case, the company insists that the fill it brings in will be tested before it is dumped in the quarries to make sure it is not contaminated with anything that is harmful to the surrounding environment including, water.

The problem the company has is that many citizens do not necessarily buy these assurances.

And what makes things even harder for the citizens and for that company, for that matter, is that Ontario’s Harris government is going about cutting and gutting environmental rules and resources in the province to a point where there may not be much in the way of government monitoring or oversight.

Contrary to what at least some companies may believe (and Ontario’s current Ford government certainly doesn’t get it), it is more of an insurance policy for everyone concerned if rules and resources are in place to make sure everything is being done safely.

And speaking of resources, Niagara At Large has not had the resources in recent weeks to follow all of the other controversial moves the Harris government has been making with respect to environmental protection and related matters to give this proposal for dumping fill at the Port Colborne Quarries the attention it deserves.

Into this news outlet has had the time to gather more information from parties on all sides of the issue, I will not comment any further on the pros and cons or ups and downs of what is being proposed here.

In the meantime, there is this public meeting scheduled this Tuesday, June 11th by a citizens group called the Niagara Water Protection Alliance that you may very well wish to attend.

I don’t have a problem with using a quarry to contain waste. That waste came out of the ground to start with. What is necessary is away to contain and treat any water that seeps through that waste. Seems a fiberglass sheet covered with clay with a runoff to a collection point where the water can then be pumped through filters and uv systems could do the job. Bernie Cusack, Wainfleet
