“Parents can finally have hope knowing that change is coming to the province, that they no longer have to continue choosing between bad and worse, that there is hope for schools, for educators and for students. “– St. Catharines NDP candidate Jennie Stevens

St. Catharines, Ontario – Ontario New Democrats are committed to bringing change for the better to schools across the province and making sure students, teachers, education professionals and children have the supports they need while in the classroom.
As the Ontario Teacher’s Federation of Teachers unveiled their endorsement of Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s plans today, Ontario NDP Niagara-area candidates Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre), Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls), and St. Catharines (Jennie Stevens) welcomed the historic endorsement saying it will bring long-needed investments and improvements to classrooms in the Niagara region.
“One of the most common issues I hear about at the door step is that the state of our classrooms is just getting worse,” said Stevens. “Teachers are having to stretch themselves thin as funding continues to be scaled back year after year while students are forced to spend their days in buildings with leaky roofs, broken stairs and water fountains they shouldn’t be drinking from.”
Stevens explained that cuts to education over the last twenty years of Liberal and Conservative governments have resulted in $16 billion dollars of repair backlog.
“Today’s news confirms that Ontario teachers support Andrea Horwath’s plans for change for the better,” Stevens said. “Parents can finally have hope knowing that change is coming to the province, that they no longer have to continue choosing between bad and worse, that there is hope for schools, for educators and for students.”
Andrea Horwath and the NDP’s plan for change for the better in education includes:
- o Eliminating EQAO testing
- o Investing in classrooms – and re-writing the education funding formula
- o Fixing crumbling schools, with a $16-billion investment
- o Putting a moratorium on school closures
- o Curbing growing class sizes, and ending kindergarten-Grade 1 split classrooms
- o Putting a cap on kindergarten class sizes at 26
- o Hiring more teachers, educational assistants, and education professionals
- o Stopping violence in schools
- o Continuing the curriculum review, while updating classroom materials to be inclusive of Indigenous and Black history and culture
