As another scorching summer begins and gas prices continue to soar, support for a tax on Big Oil’s windfall profits is also heating up.
[New polling](https://www.taxfairness.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=8445&qid=2680951) shows that two in three Canadians support a windfall profits tax on Canada’s Big Oil companies, which are set to rake in $90 billion of windfall profits as a result of Donald Trump’s war in Iran.
A windfall profits tax could raise $46 billion to directly compensate Canadian families facing skyrocketing energy costs, invest in renewable energy infrastructure, and insulate Canada from the next crisis by making us less dependent on volatile global fossil fuel prices.
The national poll, conducted by Liaison Strategies, also shows that making Big Oil pay has a majority of support in every age bracket, gender, and region—and a majority of support of voters for every political party.
Support is highest in Ontario (69 per cent) and Québec (73 per cent), but nationwide, only 24 per cent of respondents oppose the proposal.
