Visit A New Exhibit At St. Catharines Library, Honours Local Military History

Niagara, Ontario – A visual reminder of the sacrifices of local residents during the First World War is on display now at the St. Catharines Library.

St. Catharines in the Great War showcases uniforms, recruitment posters, photographs, letters and other artifacts from the First World War to tell the story of local men and women who served during the war. A partnership of the St. Catharines Heritage Advisory Committee and the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, the exhibit is on display in the lobby of the St. Catharines Central Library Branch, located at 54 Church St. in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario.

The exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours and will be in place until the end of November.

“Heritage is about people, so as a committee we felt it was important to honour our community’s proud military history,” said Kevin Blozowski, staff representative for the St. Catharines Heritage Advisory Committee.

“If you’re downtown, stop by the library and spend a few minutes learning about the role the community played in the First World War.”

In addition to honouring the sacrifices of locals who fought in the First World War, the Museum and Heritage Committee are also hoping to hear from residents about how their families were involved in the war effort.

There will be a guest book beside St. Catharines in the Great War and locals can also use the hashtag #heritagestc or email heritagestc@stcatharines.ca to share stories from the First World War.

“St. Catharines residents were actively involved in the war, so as a community it’s important for us to document and share their stories,” said Kathleen Powell, Supervisor of Historical Services at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

“We want to ensure that the sacrifices of men and women from Niagara aren’t forgotten.”

St. Catharines in the Great War is the fourth display coordinated by the Heritage Advisory Committee and the third in conjunction with the St. Catharines Museum.
