A Call-Out from Karl Dockstader, a Niagara resident and member of the local indigenous community
The Thundering Waters Forest in Niagara Falls, Ontario is currently slated for a wholesale death by development by the Chinese GR (Can) Investment Co LTD.
There has not been official and full recognition of the value of this land asset by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, the Niagara Falls Council, Niagra’s Regional Council, the provincial government or the federal government.
This is so despite the fact that destruction of a forest of this size is virtually unprecedented in the Niagara area in recent times and challenges the principles of the Treaty of Niagara.
Members of the local Indigenous community and its allies are rallying to:
- Put a moratorium on the development of the Thundering Waters Forest until a clear, transparent, public process can decisively establish the full social, environmental and economic benefit of this forest remaining completely intact.
The rally will take place from 6pm-7pm on July 7th at the courtyard in front of City Hall and include a traditional big drum, women’s hand drum singers, speakers from the Indigenous community, allies and environmentalists.
