Ontario’s Liberal Government Promises It “Will Not” Increase HST Or Gas Tax

From the Office of Ontario Premier Kathleen WynneQueen’s Park, March 13th, 2014 – Ontario will move forward with a robust transportation and transit infrastructure plan. That plan will not include increases in the gas tax, HST or personal income taxes aimed at middle-income earners.

Building new transit and new and expanded highways, roads and bridges is important to all Ontarians and essential to the province’s short- and long-term economic growth, and job creation plan.

The Ontario government will continue to help people in their everyday lives, especially middle-income families, through measures that include: an increase in the minimum wage to $11 an hour effective June 1; a 30% post-secondary tuition grant; full-day kindergarten, which saves parents up to $6,500 per child; and a plan to lower auto insurance rates by 15% on average.

Since 2003, the Ontario Government has made significant investments in transit, roads, bridges, hospitals and schools. Highlights include:

  • More than 7,900 kilometres of roads and more than 950 bridges built or re-built;
  • 10 new GO Train stations and two replacement stations built;
  • 23 new hospitals built or underway and 12 major hospital projects currently under construction;
  • Nearly 650 new schools opened, planned or under construction, and 27,000 repairs to roofs, windows and boilers.

Assisting Ontario’s families is part of the government’s economic plan to create jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths – its people and strategic partnerships.

QUICK FACTS

  • Congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is costing Ontarians at least $6 billion a year in the region alone. That cost is projected to rise to $15 billion by 2031.
  • The 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant saves students $1,730 on tuition in post-secondary degree programs and $790 for students in diploma or certificate programs.
  • Ontario families can save up to $6,500 per year in child care costs by enrolling their child in full-day kindergarten.
  • The government now funds 21 vaccines – up from 8 in 2003, saving families an average of $2,500 per child.
  • The government is moving forward with a made-in-Ontario plan to help workers save enough for a comfortable retirement.

QUOTES

“My government will continue to make people’s everyday lives better and work to lower the cost of living – particularly for middle-income earners and their families. I know people are feeling the pinch, and that’s why we will continue to take action to help middle-income families make ends meet. We will also bring forward a robust plan to improve transit and transportation across the province.”
 — Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario

 Related to this news from the Ontario Premier’s Office, here is a response circulated later this March 13th by the province’s Tim Hudak Conservatives.

WYNNE PLAYING POLITICS TO AVOID ELECTION

 QUEEN’S PARK – Premier Kathleen Wynne is simply not to be believed when it comes to any promise she makes on taxes and will do whatever the NDP dictates so she can cling to power, PC MPP Vic Fedeli asserted today.

Fedeli was reacting to news that Premier Wynne is desperately backing away from new taxes for Ontarians as part of her Toronto transit scheme.

 “The Liberal tax-and-spend record of the last decade is quite clear.  They promise one thing as an election approaches, then do the opposite afterwards – the Health Premium tax is a prime example,” said Fedeli.

 “This is a pre-election mirage intended solely to get the Liberals past the next vote.”

 Fedeli says Wynne pledging not to raise taxes to fund Toronto transit flies in the face of the advice of her own handpicked transit panel.

 Given that the Premier has shown no interest in reining in spending or finding efficiencies, she now has to explain how she plans to come up with the $2 billion she’s banking on in annual funding for Toronto transit, Fedeli continued.

 “Whether it’s transit or the economy, this government has proven they have no plan,” said Fedeli. “Working with the NDP, they’ll do whatever it takes to stay in power.”

 “It’s time for the people of Ontario to have their say – what we need here is a change of direction,” said Fedeli. “We’re the only party with a plan for transit and a plan to bring good jobs back to Ontario.”

  2. If you live in Fort Erie one could be forgiven if they view those words from a Liberal Premier “I will not raise your taxes” with a great deal of sceptism as those words were uttered by one Dalton Mc,Guinty when he was campaigning in our town, he also said that Fort Erie would never lose it’s hospital.,!!! Once in the Premiers seat, he gave us the Health Tax,then he made a deal with the Stephen Harper government, to just about tax everything else, the famous harmonised tax.GST/OST together, reaping billions more money off the backs of Ontario residents.then without fanfare quietly put in an Eco tax an extra recycling tax. Then he stole back the Slot Program at the Fort Erie Racetrack, so he could build a Casino downtown Toronto. brought in a draconian no smoking rule that killed 60% of the business at those slots and Bingo Halls.He pulled the welcome mat to thousands of American visitors, who were the life blood of our Town.This was a Town that used to vote in Liberals year after year. He had the audacity to say during the worst recession in 40 years, that the slot revenue is down, this comment shows how out of touch those imbeciles at Queens Park really are. I am one angry and disgusted resident of Fort Erie.

  3. George, you are giving too much credit to McGuinty. Paul Godfrey, Tim Hudak’s friend, should receive some credit for the concept of “Modernized Gambling”. The push to place the slots in bingo halls is underway _ one of Fort Erie’s bingo halls is advertising this fact.
    If nothing else, we can thank Mike Harris for putting the slots at the race tracks _ I am not sure we can thank him for anything else.
    Perhaps the Premier will re-introduce regulations so that safety comes before excessive profits for the corporations that pay ‘lip service’ to safety. While she is at it return power to one system thus reducing the number of CEO’s _ give them the experience of being put out of work without the generous hand shake as they would give to us.
