MALCOLM ALLEN, MP, WELLAND TO HOST TOWN HALL MEETING ON OLD AGE SECURITY
WELLAND– On Saturday, Member of Parliament for Welland, Malcolm Allen will be joined by NDP Seniors Critic, Irene Mathyssen and CUPE Pension Specialist Kevin Skerrett for a public discussion on the importance of Old Age Security.
The Conservative government in Ottawa is threatening the retirement security of all Canadians. A few weeks ago, PM Stephen Harper announced his government is considering a major cut to our Old Age Security program. He wants to increase the eligible age for OAS from 65 to 67. This town hall meeting will give members of the community an opportunity to voice their concerns and receive current information regarding this important issue.

NEW DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE MOTION TO SAVE POPULAR HOME RETROFIT PROGRAM
Soaring energy costs are making life even more expensive for Niagara families: Allen
OTTAWA – New Democrats are calling on Parliament to review the cancellation of the ecoENERGY Retrofit Homes program and taking the Conservatives to task for retroactively changing the application deadline.
In a northern country like Canada, investments in energy efficiency should be a no-brainer,” said Malcolm Allen (MP Welland). “Stephen Harper needs to understand the negative impact that this broken promise has had on my constituents. I have heard from many folks in the riding who are telling me they have found the program very useful and are extremely disappointed in this government’s decision to cancel it.”
The government’s own numbers show that households saved, on average, $700 a year per $2000 spent on utilities and reduced their energy consumption by over 20 per cent. A quarter of a million Canadians used the program, but after announcing a yearlong extension, the government turned around and stopped taking applications two months before the March 31st due date.
“New Democrats have been clear that ecoEnergy should be made permanent in order to provide long-term certainty for both Canadian homeowners and job creators,” said Allen. “But in the interest of fairness, the government should at least honour its commitments to those already participating in the program.”
The Save EcoENERGY Coalition, noting the billions being spent on subsidies for oil and gas companies, also wants the government to focus on energy savings. Roughly 1,000 businesses that specialize in energy efficiency might have to close their doors if the program is not renewed.
