To Prime Minister Carney – Don’t Let Trump Pull A Zelensky On You

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted May 5th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump. The first face-to-face meeting is about to begin.

You can almost feel the tension building across Canada as our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, prepares to have his first meeting with Trump in the White House this Tuesday, May 6th.

And the meeting itself could be tense indeed – coming just two days after Trump went on the U.S. television news program ‘Meet The Press’ and repeated his rants about making Canada a “51st state”  and about all the ways Canada has nothing to offer the United States at all. Continue reading

No More Delays! Ford Gov.  Must Answer For Its Climate Record In Historic Youth Climate Case

“Throughout history, it’s often fallen on young people to fight for what’s right. I’m fighting for my future, and for the future of every young person in Canada,” – one of the youth applicants involved in the climate  case against the Ford Government , Sophia Mathur

News from Ecojustice Canada, Canada’s largest non-profit environmental law charity, and the lawyer firm Stockwoods LLP which represents clients in civil and commercial litigation, criminal cases, and administrative and public law matters.

A Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – These young people are heroes from bringing this case against a government that has a track record of gutting environmental protection measures in our province. They deserve all of our support and you can help by checking out the details at the bottom of this post on how you can help fund the not–for-profit group of lawyers representing them at Ecojustice.

Now here is the News Release from Ecojustice –

Ford Government’s Bill 5 Would End Endangered Species Protections and Attack Clean Energy

Newly tabled bill is an attack on the public direct from the Trump Administration playbook

“Bill 5 would repeal Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, 2007, marking the end of most meaningful provincial protections for endangered, threatened and special concern species in Ontario.” – Phil Pothen, Ontario Environment program manager, Environmental Defence

“It’s appalling that the government is exploiting U.S. threats to push an ideological agenda that could effectively ban solar energy in Ontario—driving up electricity bills and increasing pollution.” – Aliénor Rougeot, Climate and Energy senior program manager, Environmental Defence

A Statement from the citizens advocacy group Environmental Defence, followed by a News Release from the Green Party of Ontario

Stop Ford Government’s Bill 5 and  attack on endangered species and cleaner, greener  environment for us all.

Toronto, Ontario – Bill 5 would, if passed, deal a body blow to the environment and hopes for energy sovereignty in Ontario.

It reads like an attempt to outdo even the most regressive policies and the most transparently false political pretexts of the Trump Administration. This Bill represents a direct attack on species at risk, clean and healthy communities, clean energy and the rights of Indigenous peoples. Continue reading

Brock U. Experts Comment On Trump’s Path To A Third Presidential Term

“Canadians and Americans need to understand that seemingly ludicrous actions by authoritarian rulers are an established path to actual despotism.” – Stefan Dolgert, Associate Professor of Political Science, Brock University

A News Release from Brock University in St. Catharines, Niagara

Posted May 5th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Will Trump’s America go for a Third Term? Based on what Trump has been able to get away with so far with the backing of his cult-like followers,, don’t rule it out.

Niagara, Ontario – With U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent launch of official “Trump 2028” merchandise, Brock University experts point to historical and recent examples of leaders who have flouted or reinterpreted laws to justify staying in office beyond term limits.

Although the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits a third term for any president, Associate Professor of Political Science Pascal Lupien says this will only present an obstacle if Trump cannot gain enough popular support.

“In Latin America, nearly every country enshrines term limits in their constitutions, but it’s quite common for presidents to remain in office despite these provisions,” he says. Continue reading

In the spring of 1970, I was still a young, idealistic high school kid who believed, as I still  do, that raising your voice in protest for good reasons can open paths to a better world.

So on May 4th of that year – exactly 55 years ago today – when I heard the news that four unarmed students were shot dead and several others were wounded by military clad National Guardsmen for protesting on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio against the War in Vietnam, I was shaken to the core as so many others, at that time, were. Trump Takes A Steamy, Stinking Dump On The Whole Catholic Church

Is There  No Bottom To This Creep’s Capacity To Offend?

A Brief Comment by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted May 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Earlier this Saturday (May 3rd) afternoon, a friend and long-time reader and supporter of Niagara At Large, sent me a news story that is just now circulating about the highly offensive  AI generated image (shown just to the right and a line or two above these  words) that  Trump either posted himself or had posted for him on his online ‘Trump Social’ media site.

Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.

As I said here a few weeks ago upon learning of the death of Pope Francis, I am not a Catholic nor am I, in any real way, a church goer. But you don’t have to be either to hold in high regard the voice that Pope Frances raised on such issues as climate change war and peace, poverty, homelessness and migrants searching to find a new and better life – a voice that the likes of Trump, who had no business attending the Pope’s April 26th funeral, could never be.

So I sum this disgusting image up with the following words that I realize some may find unbecoming of me –

Canada’s Prime Minister Honours Role Of Free & Independent News Media On World Press Freedom Day

A Statement from Canada’s Prime Minister,Mark Carney

Posted May 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Today (This May 3rd, 2025 , the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, issued the following statement on World Press Freedom Day:

“In this time of crisis, we must protect what it means to be Canadian. A strong, independent, and free press both defines and defends our values. My new government will protect reliable Canadian public forums, so we can tell our own stories in our own languages.

Prime Minister Mark Carney during a recent scrum with members of the news media and unlike Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, always making generous time for questions

“Central to this work is strengthening our public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, which has stitched this nation together, reporting from Corner Brook to Trois-Rivières to Whitehorse to Comox, bringing Canadians together at critical moments. My new government will also protect and fund more local news, including those with Indigenous perspectives.

“In a sea of foreign media and disinformation, we need Canadian voices more than ever.”

Doug Draper at work in the newsroom, back in the days when there still were newsrooms. file photo

A Brief Comment from Doug Draper At Niagara At Large – After all of federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s demonizing of the news media and vows to ‘defund’ the CBC, much in the way his political counterpart Donald Trump does with media south of the border, including his move to defund Public Radio and Television, what a refreshing change this is.

Prime Minister Carney’s stated support here for Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC, and his clear recognition of the important role free and independent news outlets play in a democracy bodes well for him.

It also lines up well iy with his pledge to defend and build a stronger Canada for all.

STOP BILL 5 – Protect Ontario’s Environment from Doug Ford NOW

“The Ontario Greens are fighting to STOP BILL 5 because we believe protecting Ontario’s land, water, and communities isn’t “red tape.” It’s common sense. And it’s the foundation for a resilient economy.”

A Call-Out to All of Us from Ontario’s Green Party

Posted May 2nd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Doug Ford just introduced Bill 5 — and it’s nothing short of a direct attack on Ontario’s natural heritage and our communities.

Disguised as an “economic growth” plan, Bill 5 will let the government bypass the Greenbelt Act and steamroll environmental protections to fast track destructive projects like the York1 landfill, Highway 413, and the Highway 401 tunnel – without proper assessments.

Bill 5 puts our water, farmland, and wildlife at risk.

On top of that –  It weakens Indigenous consultation and tramples local voices. Communities near the proposed York1 landfill made it clear last year: they value their water and natural heritage. They demanded a full environmental review. And now? Ford is walking back his promises and trying to ram this bill through. Continue reading

When I hear and watch Mark Carney speak, I can’t help but think of Chesley Sullenberger.

Chesley Sullenberger- more famously known as ‘Sully’ – was the commercial airline pilot who in 2009, when the engines on his jet suddenly cut out, did not panic, but was able to remain cool-headed while using all of the skills he had to glide that huge plane to a landing on the choppy waters of the Hudson River and assist all 155 passengers and crew members aboard out of the sinking plane and onto waiting rescue boats alive. Canada’s NDP Leader  On Trump Threats – Water, Health Care, and Indigenous Rights hould Not Be For Sale in Trump Trade Talks

An Election Message fromNew Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh

Posted April 24th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

New Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh

As Donald Trump ramps up trade threats, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh delivered a clear message: Canada’s water, public health care, environmental protections, and Indigenous Treaty rights are not bargaining chips—and New Democrats will be there to make sure no government dares to put them on the table.

Standing with workers in Winnipeg, Singh warned that Trump’s “America First” approach could place pressure on Canada to roll back core protections and exploit public resources.

New Democrats committed to protecting key sectors from being exploited in future trade deals, including:

  • Strategic resources like critical minerals and fresh water
  • Public infrastructure like hydro and transit
  • Health care, pharmaceutical supply chains and domestic manufacturing
  • Charter rights, labour protections, environmental rules, and Treaty rights

“We’ve seen what happens when trade deals are made in secret,” said Singh. “Canadians end up paying the price. Our water, our health care, and our rights are not for sale—and no government has the right to trade them away.”

Singh reminded the Liberals that the NDP forced the government to bring transparency and oversight to all new trade negotiations. That means:

  • Tabling a notice of intent in the House of Commons at least 90 days before trade talks begin
  • Presenting clear negotiating objectives 30 days before negotiations
  • Publishing a full economic impact assessment before any implementing legislation is introduced

“Canadians deserve to know what’s being negotiated—and who benefits,” said Singh. “The days of secret trade-offs and backroom deals must end.”

Singh said the best defence against Trump is building real resilience at home—by expanding public power, lowering costs, and creating good jobs so working people aren’t left carrying the weight.

His plan centres on a stronger East-West energy grid, using Manitoba’s clean power to strengthen the Prairies, connect the North, and build an economy we control—together.

Singh closed with a message to voters: “If we want to protect what makes Canada, Canada—we need to stop trading it away. That starts with drawing a line— and sending New Democrats to Ottawa to hold it.”

What To Do With Homeless Encampments? Poilievre Announces His Plan To Empower Police To “Shut Down Tent Cities”

There Poilievre Goes Again, Channeling Trump On a Complex Problem That Could  and Should Be Treated With Less Force and  More Humanely

A News Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted April 23rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

At a campaign stop in Hamilton this April 23rd, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre began his remarks with a boast that he has received endorsements from a number of police associations across Ontario including those in Toronto, Durham, Peel, Barrie, and Sault Ste. Marie.

These  endorsements, Poilievre suggests, are in no small way due to  his pledge to get tougher on crime and to put an end to what he has repeatedly called a ‘lost Liberal decade” of “easy bail and soft-on-crime policies.”

Then Poilievre got right down to some of that tough talk that is sure to please his right-wing base, if not others, on how he will deal with the growing numbers of homeless people across our region and the rest of the country who are huddled down  in encampments – Continue reading

Tell Trump That Canada’s Freshwater Is Not For Sale!

Joint Statement: Freshwater In Canada Is Not For Sale –

Toronto, Ontario  – A network of water protection advocates, and environmental and Indigenous-led organizations have released an open letter signed by 85 groups to call on all federal political parties and candidates to commit to defending freshwater in Canada.

The Trump Administration’s threat to freshwater in Canada cannot be underestimated. It has threatened to tear up water agreements to tap shared waters, while simultaneously gutting U.S. departments and initiatives that support transboundary waters, like the Great Lakes. Continue reading

Mark Carney’s Liberals To Protect And Modernize Canada’s Public Health Care System

“In America, health care is big business – but in Canada, it is a right…. My new government will invest in our public health care system to add thousands of new doctors, build new hospitals, and deliver better mental health services. We will build a stronger Canadian health care system.”                                                                – Federal Liberal Leader Mark Carney

Election News from the Campaign of Federal Liberal Leader Mark Carney

This election comes at a time of crisis. President Trump is trying to fundamentally reshape the international trading system and, in the process, he’s rupturing the global economy.

With Canada, he has been even more direct and aggressive: he is trying to break us so America can own us.

Unlike the Conservatives who will slash public services, a Mark Carney government will protect and build a strong economy and strong Canadian institutions that are more important now than ever – including public health care. Continue reading

On This 55th Anniversary Of Earth Day, Let’s All Pledge To Be ‘Part Of The Solution’

A Brief Earth Day Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted this Earth Day, April 2025 on Niagara At Large

Our earth, photographed for the first time by astronauts orbiting the moon in late 1968

The very first Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970 in the wake of seeing that first iconic photo taken by astronauts orbiting the moon of our earth – the one and only oasis in the universe that we know, to this day, that we have to live on – glowing like a jewel in the vast darkness of space.

That first day ballooned into tens-of-millions of people around the world, including in Canada and the United States, rallying for more action on the part of ourselves and our governments to protect and preserve the life-sustaining resources of this precious planet.

In the wake of the grassroots movement spawned by Earth Day 1970, we saw governments in Canada and other regions of the world create whole departments dedicated to protecting the environment, and pass legislation to better care for the quality of our water and air. Continue reading

Pope Francis Was One Of The World’s Most Powerful Voices For Climate Action

The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all.” – from Pope Francis’s 2015 Papal Encyclical

A Brief News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted April 21st, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.

I am not a Catholic, nor am I, in any real way at all, a church goer.

But you don’t have to be both or either of those to hold Pope Francis, who died this April 21st at age 88, in high regard for the powerful voice he was around the world for action on the climate crisis.

Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Beuno Aires, Agentina and who had a background in science and the humanities, took his papal name from  St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th/13 century Catholic friar who is known by many for his passion for wildlife and the environment, and for embracing a Biblical proverb, paraphrased in more modern times to read; “Where there is no vision, the people parish.” Continue reading

Gateway to historic Rand Estate in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) has this week issued a final order dismissing the Marotta/Solmar applications for a high density subdivision on the back half of the Rand Estate.

As our supporters will recall, Mr. Marotta’s company Solmar applied for permission to build almost 200 houses on the historic Rand Estate.  The subdivision would have been accessed through a narrow panhandle at 200 John St immediately beside the heritage-protected Rand house.  Solmar appealed directly to the OLT to approve its proposed subdivision, bypassing the Town. A Message to Canadians from Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus, representing a Riding in Timmins, Ontario

A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus of Timmins, Ontario, in as clear a voice as any, urges us all to keep standing  up to Trump and “stay strong.”

This Easter Holiday weekend, I found the following video circulating on the internet of Charlie Angus who is, in my view, one of most most direct speaking, tell-it-like-it-is politicians serving provincially or federally anywhere in Canada.

In the video, Angus delivers a message all of us who have been paying attention have heard before.

Yet  it is one that, as long as Trump continues to threaten our  sovereignty, our economic welfare and all of  the benefits,  values and opportunities we hold dear in our Canada. we have to keep hearing and keep telling ourselves and others time and time again to STAY STRONG.

Now here is that video of a message he delivered earlier this month. Please give it a listen by clicking on the screen immediately below, and share this post on Niagara At Large with your friends –

A Footnote from Doug Draper – Let’s all continue to purchase as many Made in Canada products as we can and from any other friendly country, and boycott everything Made in the U.S.A. and let’s join, if we haven’t already, the growing number of Canadians cancelling all travel to Trump’s America until Trump completely stops going to war on us.

Stand Strong & Proud Fellow Canadians.  Like The Crocuses In My Garden On The Coldest Of Days, We Will Survive!

A Brief Message of Hope from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted April 17th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Even through the nastiest weather this spring, the crocusts in my garden survived. photo by Doug Draper

One of he sure signs of spring for me each year are the purple crocuses that pop up in a garden in my front yard.

I always marvel at how well these small flowers, as fragile as they appear to be, stand up to almost any kind of weather Mother Nature may throw at them this time of year.  And this year, in particular, they have managed to live on through bouts of heavy rain, through intense winds and snow pellets, and through temperatures that have fluctuated between a bit of warmth and below freezing cold.

Yet, they still managed to survive and, as strange as it may seem, I can’t help but look at them opening their petals each day and say; “If they can do it, surely I will be able to make it through a spring too full of cold and wet weather, and through all of the threats and insults that the orange bully south of the border has been throwing at us too.” Continue reading

Ontario’s Ford Government Unlocking Free Trade Within Canada

Province unleashing billions in new economic opportunity by tearing down barriers to internal free trade and labour mobility

News from the Office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford

TORONTO — As a next step in its plan to protect Ontario by unleashing the province’s economy, the Ontario government is introducing the Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act to unlock free trade and labour mobility within Canada.

This legislation will, if passed, create new opportunities for job creation and investment attraction, supporting economic integration across Canada and cutting costly and unnecessary red tape to help protect and grow Ontario and Canada’s economies.

“For too long, we’ve let red tape and endless regulations hold back our economy, making us vulnerable to external threats, including from President Trump’s tariffs,” said Premier Doug Ford.

“Not anymore. The legislation we’re introducing today (this April 16th) will make Ontario a national leader when it comes to trade between provinces and territories, so we can strengthen and unify Canada and create new markets and opportunities for Ontario workers and goods.” Continue reading

Increasingly, we are also guiding our communities through another kind of crisis: recurring wildfires, floods, storms and deadly climate events. We believe this is the moment for Canada to fight back, by investing in national projects that will connect and protect our country from the dual threats of tariffs and climate change.  Continue reading
