NIAGARA, Ontario — NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is highlighting the importance of supporting Ontario’s wine industry as U.S. alcohol products disappear from store shelves due to Trump-era trade tariffs.
“Ontario’s wine industry is critically important to our local economy and to the identity of Niagara region,” said Gates. “With U.S. wine sales dropping by over 90 per cent, this is a golden opportunity for Ontario grape and wine producers to step up and showcase the incredible quality of local wines.”
Gates noted that Niagara is home to Canada’s largest concentration of vineyards and wineries, sustaining thousands of good jobs and driving year-round tourism.
“As someone who has long championed our local wineries and worked to eliminate barriers, like the unfair 6.1 per cent tax on 100 per cent Ontario-grown wines, I know firsthand how much potential this industry holds,” said Gates. “Every bottle of Ontario wine sold supports local farmers, workers, and small businesses.”
Gates emphasized that by choosing local wine, Ontarians are strengthening their communities and helping the industry continue to grow.
