Help Protect Ontario’s Farms This Local Food Week!

“At a time when Trump’s tariffs threaten Ontario’s economy, we must protect our defining economic advantage; our $50 billion food and farming sector.”

A Message from Ontario’s Green Party

Posted June 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

This week is Local Food Week in Ontario – a time to celebrate the hardworking farmers who bring fresh, local, Ontario food to communities across the province.

But every day, under the Ford government, Ontario loses 319 acres of farmland in Ontario every day.

Thanks To Trump’s War On Canada, It Was Another Weekend Of Near Empty Border Bridges & Another Week Of Buying Canadian & Boycotting Made in the U.S.A.

Triump’s U.S. Ambassador To Canada Pete Hoekstra lectures us to “get over it.”

Late this past May, around the same time King Charles was visiting Canada to deliver a Speech from the Throne that, among other things, celebrated our country’s sovereignty, Pete Hoekstra, Trump’s recently appointed ambassador to Canada went out of his way to insult and belittle us as if we were behaving like a nation of errant children.

“Get over it,” Hoekstra told us of our continued strong and unified resistance to Trump’s efforts to crush our economy with punitive trade tariffs and repeated threated to make Canada  a “51st state.” Continue reading

Farewell To Hudson’s Bay – The Last Of The Grand Old Department Stores In Canada

Final days for the Hudson’s Bay store at the Pen Centre shopping mall in St. Catharines/Niagara. photo by Doug Draper

(A quick forward note from Doug Draper – In a way, I can’t believe I am writing a lament to the closing of a retail store, but I hope I have succeeded in making one or two larger points that speak to our times here.)

I took one last a walk through the big Hudson’s Bay store at the Pen Centre in St. Catharines this last week of May and I could not help but think of my late mother and so many of her peers who came of age during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Second World War that followed.

Final days of the Hudson’s Bay store at the Pen Centre in St. Catharines/Niagara, photo by Doug Draper

When the war was over and they were starting homes and families, one of the things they enjoyed was opening the mail box and finding one of those big fat catalogues from stores like Eaton’s Simpson Sears and Hudson’s Bay.

Many of us from the post World War II Baby Boomer Generation may remember trips we took with our parents to those stores that, at the time, seemed like grand retail palaces glittering with just about anything (outside of groceries) that a person might want to buy. Continue reading

Help Stop Ford’s Bill 5 – Time Is Running Out!  Bill 5 Could Pass Next Week

An Urgent Call-Out to We, the People, from the Green Party of Ontario

Posted May 30th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Time is ticking – Doug Ford is days away from passing Bill 5, a law that would:

  • – Gut protections for endangered species,
  • – Create lawless zones where his insider friends call the shots, and
  • – Violate the constitutional rights of Indigenous nations.

This is a full-scale attack on environmental protections, local democracy, and Indigenous sovereignty. And it could pass as early as next week.

Ontario Government  to Introduce Legislation to Strengthen School Board Oversight

New measures would also help protect children and youth and promote student success

“We are making it clear that school boards must put students first — not politics, not bureaucracy — and that we will act decisively when they fall short of that responsibility.”                      – Paul Calandra, Ontario Minister of Education

News from the Ontario Government of Premier Doug Ford

Posted May 29th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

TORONTO —This May 29th, 2025, Ontario will introduce the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025, that, if passed, would strengthen government oversight, accountability and transparency in public school boards, postsecondary education and children’s aid societies.

The changes would also increase the safety, well-being and academic and personal achievement of children and youth.

To furtheaddress several cases of financial mismanagement by school boards, the proposed enhanced measures would increase government’s oversight of school board finances, governance and program performance, including giving the Minister of Education the ability to respond quickly to matters of public interest.

Paul Calandra, Ontario Minister of Education

“Parents deserve confidence that school boards are making decisions in the best interests of their children’s education,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education. “That’s why we are strengthening accountability and transparency across Ontario’s education system — to ensure that every dollar invested is preparing students with practical skills for good-paying, stable careers.

Ford’s Bill 5 Threatens Our Wild Species And Wild Spaces. Will You Step Up?

An Urgent Call-Out from Ontario Nature, a non-profit citizens organization advocating for the protection and preservation of our natural heritage

Posted May 29th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Our natural areas and biodiversity are under attack — again.

(The Ford government’s) Bill 5 is poised to further erode the already-weakened protections for Ontario’s natural areas, including wetlands. This is part of a troubling pattern — one where nature continues to lose ground.

The already weakened Endangered Species Act will be revoked under Bill 5, threatening vulnerable plants and animals many of whom depend on wetlands.

‘Special Economic Zones’ create lawless areas where all remaining protections can be removed, putting our remaining wetlands more at risk. Continue reading

Trump Reminds Us Why It’s Over With The U.S. & Why We’ve Got To Move On

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over.”                                                                – Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, March 27th, 2025

He’s like the mean kid in the school yard who can’t stand anyone else having a good time. He’s just got to say or do something nasty or even threatening to try to spoil it.

So there was U.S. President Donald Trump – wasting no time after King Charles of England wrapped up what many Canadians reportedly viewed as a successful visit to our country, complete with a Speech from The Throne that, among other things, celebrated Canada’s sovereignty and special place as a democracy in the world – spewing more venom about making Canada “a 51st state.” Continue reading

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON– The Shaw Festival today unveiled a Movement for Real Human Connection, a $150 million mission that will transform The Shaw into a centre for communication, creativity and curiosity.

A unique space dedicated to deepening connection through art, the new Shaw Festival will be a place where audiences, artists and communities can find each other and awaken their inner artist.

“The Shaw is in the vanguard of a movement for real human connection,” said Tim Carroll (TC), Artistic Director for the Shaw Festival.

“Theatre is perfect to take the lead. To write a play, or to create the world in which it takes place, you need to release your imagination; to perform a play you need to have the courage and the technique to look someone in the eye and tell them the truth; and to watch a play you need the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see how the world might look to them.”

“These are the qualities our society needs, now more than ever.”

Niagara MPPs Call on Premier to Stop Delays and Fund Critical Wastewater Infrastructure

NIAGARA – Niagara MPPs Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) and Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) issued a joint call for the Ford government to finally deliver on funding for the South Niagara Wastewater Treatment Plant—an essential infrastructure project that has stalled while costs climb, and housing targets slip further out of reach.

“In 2023 and 2024, the Premier committed to funding the South Niagara Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said MPP Wayne Gates.

“But not a single dollar has flowed to our region’s largest infrastructure project. Since then, water bills have jumped over 12% just to patch aging infrastructure. News from the Government of Ontario and Destination Ontario

A Memorial Day weekend morning on the U.S. side of the Peace Bridge. We used to come in droves. Now most of us are coming no more.

A Brief Forward Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – If Trump’s war against Canada has done at least one good thing, it has been to encourage us to stop crossing the Canada-U.S. border  to his country and discover more of our own.

Just this past weekend alone – a holiday weekend in the United States – and typically one that sees large line-ups of Canadians crossing the Peace Bridge to enter the U.S., the  U.S. side of the bridge was virtually empty of traffic.

Of course, for Americans who believe Trump’s nonsense that Canada is a hot bed for drug dealers and other criminals, a plunge in the number of Canadians crossing over to their country may very well be good news too.

Now here is the News Release from the Ontario government and Destination Ontario. –

TORONTO – As summer nears, there has never been a better time to explore and celebrate all the beauty and culture Ontario has to offer.

In the face of U.S. tariffs, continued economic uncertainty and renewed interest in travelling within Canada, the Ontario government is launching a new marketing campaign to encourage domestic travel and protect local Ontario businesses. Continue reading

Master R&B Singer George Olliver of Mandala Fame Who Died This April At Age 79

A Brief Tribute by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher and life-long music lover Doug Draper

George Olliver, wowing an audience with The Mandala back around 1967.

Once upon a time, there was a neighbourhood in the City of Toronto called Yorkville that was –  before all of the  magic and kaleidoscope of  colours in  it were gentrified into oblivion –    one of the most alluring havens in Canada for aspiring young writers, painters, actors, musicians and bohemians of every stripe you could imagine.

Out of this cornucopia of creativity came something in the 1960s called “The Toronto Sound” that boomed from the amplifiers of groups with names like ‘Stitch In Tyme’, ‘The Ugly Ducklings’  and  The Paupers’ – groups that were just as talented as so many of their counterparts coming out of the United States at the time but did not make as large a splash on the music scene because they did not have the same access to what legendary Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell called the “star making machinery’ that included big record label distributors and radio stations that played to huge numbers of listeners. Spotting Fakes And Facts – Brock Experts On Why Digital Literacy Is Critical For Children

Let’s Continue Sending A Strong Message To Trump By Taking ‘NO’ Trips To The U.S.A

Make This The Worst Memorial Day Weekend for Canadian Visitors that America Has Ever Had

Let’s Also Encourage The Best And Brightest In the U.S.A. To Move Here

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

Posted May 23rd, 2025

This May 24th to 26th is Memorial Day Weekend across the border in the U.S.A. and it is usually a weekend when the Peace Bridge and Rainbow Bridge crossings are packed with traffic heading to the Buffalo, Niagara Falls, N.Y. areas and beyond.

This year let’s stand together with growing numbers of our fellow Canadians in keeping those border crossings to the American side void of as much traffic as possible, just as they have been for much of the last four or five months since Trump began threatening our country’s economic welfare and sovereignty.

A sight that would seem unthinkable before Trump took office again this past January. Hardly a single car or truck crossing the border into the United States at the Peace Bridge on a Saturday morning earlier this May, at a time of the week when this bridge crossing usually it would be packed.

This May 23rd, on a CBC radio program, several Canadians were asked if they have any plans to travel to the United States in the days, weeks or months ahead, and it was heartening to hear them – almost to a person – say absolutely not.

Bill 17 – An Introduction To The Ford Government’s Latest Destructive Act

By Liz Benneian, founding member of Biodiversity and Climate Action Niagara, a coalition of citizen groups and individuals across the region

Posted May 23rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Liz Benneian, Biodiversity and Climate Action Niagara

Not only is the Province introducing the patently undemocratic Bill 5 which will create lawless Special Economic Zones that can be applied to ANY land/area in the Province and will kill the Endangered Species Act, they are also doubling down on their highly controversial Ministerial Zoning Orders which the Auditor General has already produced a scathing report on.

With the so-called “Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act”, Bill 17 (tabled earlier this May), the province is looking to fast-track road, transit and housing construction by giving itself more control over municipal processes — in part by expanding controversial minister’s zoning orders and giving those powers to the infrastructure minister as well as the housing minister.

The Bill also prevents municipalities from requiring higher standards for design/energy efficiency of buildings than is currently prescribed in Ontario’s out-dated building code. Continue reading

“God Spared My Life For A Reason” – Donald Trump

A BForeword by Niagara Draper –

In these upside-down, inside-out Trumpian times we are living in, I’m not sure that words like “shocking,” “outrageous,” or “blasphemous” pack much of a punch any more.

For tens-of-millions of people south of the Canada-U.S. border and – I’m sorry to say – for more than a few north of it, “shocking,” “outrageous,” and “blasphemous” have become the new norm.

It wasn’t really all that long ago that if any political leader in a free and democratic country suggested even mildly that they were put there by divine right to serve God’s purpose, leaders of the opposition would spend days, if not weeks, verbally ripping them apart.

And here is at least one question I have.

Niagara Isn’t So Unsafe That We Need To Be Blowing So Much Of Our Regional Budget On Policing

And Where Is The Pushback From Our Regional Council When It Comes To Saying ‘NO’ To Soaring Policing Costs?

A Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted May 20th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

I know this probably isn’t going to go over so well with the people out there who are so afraid they will be robbed or worse that they go to bed at night with three two or three extra bolts locking their front and back doors, but I don’t believe it is so unsafe out there that we should let fear reign over good judgment and throw such large amounts of our regional tax dollars at policing.

I know we need a police service. Every community needs one for reasons I don’t think I need to explain here. And there is no denying we have some crime here. That is true of every region across the country.

We’re not living along the border between Russia and Ukraine here. Does Niagara’s Regional Police Service really need one of these at a cost of $300,000?

But why on earth, in a relatively safe region like Niagara, do we need a police force with an armed tank, with military-style assault weapons, and now, a helicopter, when we have enough problems down here on the ground that need addressing, like too many of our fellow citizens lining up at food banks, too many who are unable to afford a roof over their head or find a job with a livable wage, just to name a few. “We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. Yesterday’s announcement that Israel will allow a basic quantity of food into Gaza is wholly inadequate.

We call on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. This must include engaging with the UN to ensure a return to delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles. We call on Hamas to release immediately the remaining hostages they have so cruelly held since 7 October 2023. Continue reading

Lest We Canadians Forget, Many Americans Still Love Us

So When They Visit Canada, Let’s Continue To Give Them A Warm Welcome

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted May 15th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

One of a number of rallies Americans have organized in support of Canada

Just as many of us on the Canadian side of the border are not crossing over to the American side out of principle or fear in the wake of Trump’s trade war, I have had some of my American friends express concern to me about how welcome they would be coming here.

“Just remember Doug,” one of my dear old friends from Cape Cod, Massachusetts has told me on more than one occasion, “many of us down here are opposed to what Trump is doing too.” Continue reading

Canada’s Largest Public Workers Union Joins Growing Numbers Of Ontarians In Saying NO To Ford’s Bill 5

Ford and Bill 5’s “special economic zones” bring worst US-style labour practices to our province, warns CUPE Ontario

A Case Against Bill 5 from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)

Posted May 15th, 2025 on Niagara at Large

Imagine going to work in a town or city where, by government decree, workers had no right to health and safety, a minimum wage, or employment protections, including the right to recourse when they were injured, fired or mistreated on the job.

That’s the reality bearing down on Ontarians once the Ford Conservatives’ Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, is made law.

Buried in Schedule 9 of this omnibus bill, now at second reading in the Ontario legislature, is the wide-ranging power to create “special economic zones” anywhere in the province. Within these zones, the provincial government can suspend or override all existing laws and regulations around labour conditions, health and safety, and environmental protections, as well as municipal regulations. Ford’s Bill 17 Ignores The Real Barriers To Housing While Scapegoating Green Standards

A Statement by Phil Pothen, Land Use and Land Development program manager for the citizens advocacy group Environmental Defence

Posted May 15h, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Toronto – With Bill 17, the Ontario government is once again choosing to ignore the most important causes of our housing shortage while scapegoating municipal policies that can actually help to improve construction efficiency and lower housing costs.

The government has been warned for years that it cannot end the housing shortage – especially the shortage of family-sized homes – without producing them in different, more efficient formats and building locations. Continue reading

No Farms, No Future. Protect Ontario’s Farmland

A Call-Out from the Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner

Posted May 14th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Every day we lose 319 acres of farmland in Ontario – that’s the equivalent of nine family farms.

Every. Single. Week!

The cause?

Urban sprawl, aggregate mining, and wasteful projects like highway 413.

We simply can’t afford to lose anymore. Food is our future — and Doug Ford is paving over it. That’s why the Ontario Greens have joined forces with Independent MPP for Haldiman–Norfolk, Bobbi Ann Brady, to introduce the Protect Our Food Act. Continue reading

Ontario’s Ford Government Permanently Cutting the Gas Tax and Taking Tolls Off Highway 407 East

Province keeping costs down for families in the face of tariffs and economic uncertainty

News from the Office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford

May 14th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A Brief Forward Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – I trust  I wouldn’t be alone if I asked – Why not bring back the gas tax and use the money raised from it to support the growth of renewable energy projects across the province?

And how about using the gas tax as another incentive for getting more people out of their cars, not to mention all of  those gas-guzzling pickups, and using public transit?

Is the answer to those questions a  flat ‘NO’?  Apparently it is given this latest news from the premiere that comes at a time when he is repeatedly using Trump’s tariff war as cover for taking us backwards when it comes to any and all efforts to address the climate crisis and  protect what is left  of our natural heritage.

Now back to Premier Ford’s News Release

As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the government is continuing to lower costs for hard-working families, support local businesses and put more money back into people’s pockets through its plan to permanently cut the gasoline and fuel tax rates, which would save households, on average, about $115 per year going forward.

The government is also proposing to remove tolls from the provincially owned Highway 407 East, which is expected to save daily commuters an estimated $7,200 annually. Continue reading

FIRST IT WAS BILL 5. NOW IT’S BILL 17! – Ontario’s Ford Government  Says It’s About “Getting Homes and Infrastructure Built Faster and Smarter”

Province Introducing Legislation and New Funding to Cut Red Tape and Speed Up Home Construction in Partnership with Municipalities – from a News Release from Niagara West Ford Government MPP Sam Ooosterhoff

A News Release from the Constituency Office of Niagara West Conservative Government MPP Sam Oosterhoff

Posted May 13, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A Brief Foreword Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – This proposed legislation – branded by the Ford government as the “Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act” (Bill 17)  – appears to book-end Ford’s controversial Bill 5 in terms of what it may do to unleash low-density urban sprawl and road construction  over more of our natural heritage, including our food-growing lands and habitat for endangered wildlife. All in a developer’s paradise where there are fewer rules and regulations  and opportunities for public  scrutiny getting in the way.

Niagara At Large will have more news and commentary on this new bill and on Bill 5 in the days ahead.

For now, though, here is Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff’s news release –

Province Introducing Legislation and New Funding to Cut Red Tape and Speed Up Home Construction in Partnership with Municipalities

The province is also increasing its historic investment in housing-enabling infrastructure by adding $400 million in immediate funding to the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund for a total of nearly $2.3 billion over four years across the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund.

“We are keeping the hope of home ownership alive for young people across Ontario and in Niagara,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West. Continue reading

An Urgent Call to Action from the Canadian Environmental Law Association, a nation-wide, non-profit legal group fighting for environmental protection

Last month, the Ontario government introduced Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. CELA’s legal team has just completed its review of the bill, and we’re calling on the government to withdraw it.

This omnibus legislation would:

  • * Suspend environmental laws in new “Special Economic Zones”, which the government is empowered to create.
  • * Weaken mining and species-at-risk safeguards, prioritizing economic growth over ecological and public-health protections.
  • * Exempt major projects from environmental environmental reviews, in particular the Dresen landfill and Eagle’s Next Mine.

Ontario’s Ford Government Signs Up For A Huge Financial And Security Risk On New Nuclear Reactors

It’s time to get real and invest in our lowest cost power options, not expensive nuclear pipe dreams

A News Release from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance

Posted May 12th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

This past May 8th the  Ford Government announced it is rolling the dice on building four untested, first-of-their-kind nuclear reactors at the Darlington Nuclear Station.

It’s an expensive and risky roll. The government claims these four reactors will cost $20.9 billion and will take 10 years to build. A much more realistic cost estimate based on real-world experience says these reactors will cost at least $27 billion.

Of course, these American-designed reactors will also depend on  enriched uranium imports from the United States . So much for sending Donald Trump a message and protecting Canada’s national security. Continue reading

On This Mother’s Day, Here is To All Mothers – The Ones Who Are Here and The Ones Who Have Passed

“When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be.”           – an opening lyric from a Beatles song  written by    Paul McCartney

A Brief Mother’s Day Message from Doug Draper

Here is to all of the good mothers out there who carried us to this life and have done so much to nurture, to teach and to enrich our lives.

This Mother’s Day is a time to pay tribute to you and I also would like to share one song for the occasion.

It is called ‘Let It Be’ and then Beatle Paul McCartney said that he was inspired to write it after his mother Mary, who died when he was 14, came to him in a dream.

In that dream, he once said in an interview; “She was reassuring me, saying, ‘It’s going to be OK, just let it be.’ I felt so great. She gave me the positive words. I woke up and thought, ‘What was that? She said ‘Let It Be.’ That’s good.’ So I wrote the song ‘Let It Be’ out of positivity.”

On this Mother’s Day, ou can hear that song, performed by The Beatles, by clicking on the screen immediately below –

Victory In Europe Day, 80 Years On

It was 80 years ago today- May 8th, 1945 – that the war against fascism in Europe – then  bomb ravaged, blood-soaked theatre of the Second World War – was finally declared over.

Now , when our freedoms and democracy are being threatened more than they have in decades , let’s remember all of those many thousands of young Canadians who fought and died to keep our freedoms and democracy alive in our  sovereign nation.

In thonour of them, let’s continue to stand together against the threats to our quality of life and to our sovereignty being aimed at us by a United States  that, before Trump,  used to be one of our closest  friends and allies.
