Niagara Region’s free compost giveaway returns this fall, giving residents an opportunity to pick up high-quality material for gardening and landscaping projects, while supplies last.

From Sept. 28 to Oct. 3, 2026, Niagara Region is offering free compost at select Regional landfill sites in exchange for a cash or non-perishable food donation that will support local charitable organizations serving Niagara residents.

While supplies last, Niagara residents can pick up a maximum of three 20-litre bags of compost at the following locations:

  • Bridge Street Landfill in Fort Erie: Mon–Fri: 8 a.m.– 5 p.m.; Sat: 8 a.m.– 4 p.m.
  • Humberstone Landfill in Welland: Mon–Fri: 8 a.m.– 5 p.m.; Sat: 8 a.m.– 4 p.m.
  • Niagara Road 12 Landfill in West Lincoln: Tue–Fri: 8 a.m.– 5 p.m.; Sat: 8 a.m.– 4 p.m.

*Compost at this location is only available to residents of Grimsby, Pelham, Lincoln and West Lincoln.

Through Niagara Region’s organics diversion programs, yard waste, food scraps, soiled paper products and other organic materials are diverted from landfill and processed into valuable compost.

This diversion helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve landfill space, and transform organic material into a resource that can be returned to the soil. The resulting compost is rich in nutrients and can be used to support healthy flower beds, gardens, trees and landscaping projects throughout the community.

Residents are responsible for loading compost into their own vehicles. Also, to help avoid delays, residents are encouraged to visit outside of peak days, including Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Cash and non-perishable food donations collected through the giveaway will support local community organizations including:

Fort Erie COPE (Community Outreach Program Erie) West Lincoln Community Care Salvation Army Thrift Store The HOPE Centre Goodwill Niagara
