Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates at a packed town hall meeting he hosted last July, expressng his opposition to building a giant ferris wheel ride on world-renown green lands next to the Horseshoe Falls
NIAGARA FALLS — NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) released the following statement following the cancellation of the proposed second observation wheel in Queen Victoria Park:
“This is a win for Niagara Falls, and it’s a win that belongs to our community. Despite the Ford government’s attempt to steamroll local voices, residents organized, signed petitions, made their voices impossible to ignore, and 1200 residents packed our town hall. They stood up for Queen Victoria Park, and they got results.
Today, we have a better solution. Instead of putting a second wheel in one of Niagara Falls’ most treasured public parks, there is now a plan for private investment to replace and expand the existing SkyWheel, creating a major new tourism attraction without sacrificing our cherished public green space.
This shows what’s possible when a community comes together and speaks up to make their voices heard. We can support tourism and good jobs while protecting the public spaces that make Niagara Falls so special. Local voices matter, and despite what Doug Ford thinks, they understand their communities best and how to build going forward.”
