Offshore wind in Lake Ontario can keep our power out of American hands

Lake America. How annoying is that?
But it’s going to take more than a sign to respond effectively to this provocation from Donald Trump. In fact, we should turn this insult into a huge opportunity to strengthen our energy sovereignty.
Instead of spending billions of dollars on American designed nuclear reactors, as Doug Ford is currently planning to do, let’s send an effective message by building offshore wind power on our side of the Great Lakes.
This is no time to make Ontario dependent on imports of American technology and enriched uranium [https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-with-us-tensions-rising-canada-lacks-its-own-uranium-enrichment/]. This is the time to build renewable in our own backyard – including in Lake Ontario.

Let’s fly our flag high by ditching American nuclear technology and fuel and creating our own climate safe, low-cost renewable power system on Ontario shores and in Ontario waters.

The Ontario Clean Air Alliance (OCAA), established in 1997, successfully led the campaign to phase out the use of dirty coal power in Ontario. We are now working to move our province to a 100% renewable electricity system. This includes replacing our high-emission gas power plants and high-cost nuclear power stations with a combination of conservation, made-in-Ontario wind and solar power, and water power imports and storage from Quebec.
