Recent widespread flooding has affected properties throughout Niagara. We’re working with local area municipalities on storm response and recovery, including eligible areas and temporarily enhanced waste collection services. New information will be posted as it becomes available.
If your property was affected, you may qualify for enhanced waste collection services. Find your city or town to learn what’s available in your area.
Residents experiencing flooding are encouraged to contact their insurer to begin their claims process.

Eligibility: In Thorold, only properties within the flood-affected boundaries are eligible.
Temporary services from Monday, Aug. 10 to Saturday, Aug. 15
Curbside garbage limits are lifted for flood-related waste from Aug. 10-14 on your regular collection day. Garbage can be placed at the curb from Aug. 10-14, even if it’s not your regular garbage collection week.
Residents are not required to book flood-waste related large items for curbside collection. There is no limit to the number of large items you can set out curbside on your scheduled collection day.
Tipping fees are waived at Humberstone Landfill and Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-off Depot until Aug. 15 (one pickup truck or trailer is the maximum load)
Visiting a landfill
If visiting Humberstone Landfill or Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-off Depot for the waived tipping fees:
- Bring identification showing you live in the eligible area
- Maximum load is one pickup truck or trailer per household
- Cross the inbound and outbound weigh scales for processing
- Follow all site rules, including sorting materials into the appropriate disposal areas
- Expect longer wait times due to higher volumes
- Vehicles may be metered onto the site to help manage traffic flow and maintain safety.
Waste facilities will close at the scheduled time. Vehicles already on-site before closing will be processed; vehicles waiting outside the gate at closing will not be admitted.
Contractors bringing material can present a work order from an affected property as proof of eligibility. The one trailer or pick up truck limit still applies.

Curbside requirements
- Separate flood-related garbage from regular household garbage
- Place material at the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled day, within 4 feet of the roadway
- Bags or cans must not weigh more than 22.7 kg (50 lbs.) each
Accepted and not accepted items
Affected households may place the following items at the curb on scheduled garbage collection days. Alternatively, these materials can be taken to public waste drop-off depots for proper disposal.
Accepted curbside
- Drywall
- Insulation
- Construction wood
- Ceramic tile
- Wood / laminate flooring
- Rolled carpeting
- Plumbing pipes
Not accepted curbside
- Household hazardous waste
- Batteries, light bulbs, paint, oils
- Appliances (fridges, dishwashers, laundry)
- Scrap metal
- Liquid materials
- Large item collection
Large household appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry machines) are not accepted curbside under this program. Use the waste search tool or Waste App to find out how to dispose of these items.
