Smoke blanketing Lady Liberty in New York during an earlier episode of smoke drifting in from Canadian wildfires in 2023
In case we need reminding of how wide-ranging the impacts of climate-related wildfires can be – and at least some of us out there seem to need reminding – the smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and other regions of Canada has now drifted as far away as New York City, Boston and Washington, D.C where the quality of the air is being declared “hazardous.”
One report from ABC News begins as follows –
‘Canadian wildfire smoke descends on parts of US, including New York City
‘More than 830 wildfires were burning in Canada, along with more than a dozen in northern Minnesota, forcing mandatory evacuations and spreading unhealthy smoke down to the Lower 48. A cloudy orange haze was seen blanketing the spires of buildings that make up New York City’s iconic skyline on Wednesday, with poor air quality expected to continue through Thursday.’

A Footnote from Doug Draper – One frightening thought has just struck me. What if Trump uses this invasion of dangerous smoke from Canada as another excuse to invade our country and turn it into the “51st state.”
Think that is farfetched? I wouldn’t be too sure that it is given what we are all currently coping with in that White House.
