A Message from Liz Benneian and Biodiversity and Climate Action Niagara

So, Bill 23 passed on Monday but don’t get disheartened.

This fight is far from over.

Niagara resident and environmental aactivist Liz Benneian, a leading member of Biodiversity and Climate Action Niagara

Now is the time to steel our spines and to prepare ourselves for the organized resistance that must go on until the day this anti-democratic, science-denying, corrupt-to-the-core government is voted out of office.

And in the immediate term, we still have to fight to protect the Greenbelt.

Please know that I am in meetings with leaders of groups from around the Province, and they are working together like never before, bringing social justice and housing affordability advocates, labour leaders and municipal officials, environmentalists and citizens’ rights groups to oppose this government.

*You have made a difference.*

The province-wide protests, your emails and phone calls to the premier and MPP, our submission on the bill, your comments on the ERO — and those of countless people and groups from across the province — all contributed to the government backing down on some things and extending the commenting periods for some of the Acts that Bill 23 would change. Well done!

It’s also important to know that while Bill 23 passed, what puts it into effect are the regulations, and those are not yet in place. *We still have the ability to influence them* so that the Bill as it is currently written, may not take effect.

There is also precedent for a Bill being passed that received such negative pushback that the regulations were never passed and so the Bill was never put into effect.

There is hope!

This is not the end, it’s the beginning. *To paraphrase Winston Churchill: “We shall fight for the beaches, we shall fight for the farming lands, we shall fight for the fields and for the watersheds, we shall fight for the forests and for the generations yet to come; we shall never surrender.”

*Our Next Rally — Let’s Make It the Largest Ever*

Please come out this Saturday, December 3rd from 2 to 3 p.m. to the Food Basic’s Plaza, 63 Main Street West, Grimsby. I will have the “Doug Ford, keep your Greenbelt promise” signs but feel free to bring your own. If you want to take home a sign for your front lawn, that would be great.

Donations for the sign can be made to https://www.wellingtonwaterwatchers.ca/donate
