Trudeau Liberals Working to Do a U.S. Republican-Style Gerrymandering Job on Our Electoral Ridings
A Brief News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper

If you voted in the last federal and provincial elections, many of you in Niagara might just as well say goodbye to the candidate you voted for.
The Trudeau government doesn’t give a damn who you voted for in those elections. It is redrawing the lines on election riding maps in ways that many of us in Niagara will lose whoever the MP or MPP it was we voted for.

Just to take the riding I live – the Riding of Niagara Centre now represented by federal Liberal MP Vance Badawey and provincial NDP MPP Jeff Burch – Trudeau’s army of bureaucrats took out their Donald Trump sharpies and drew lines around all of Thorold that would now place it in the Niagara West Riding, where federal and provincial Tories rule.
I didn’t vote for Tories in the last federal or provincial elections, or in any elections going back more than 40 years, but thanks to Trudeau and company, I might very likely, according to these new riding maps, have them as my MPs and MPPs.
It is disgusting that a bunch of Trudeau bureaucrats in Ottawa can do this.

And why? Why isn’t Trudeau spending more time doing something about the billions of dollars of our money he is giving away in subsidies to a tar sands industry that is ravaging our environment?
Instead he and his Liberals are working to gerrymander our ridings like the Trump Republicans in the United States do.

(A Footnote from Doug Draper at NAL – In theory, the three-member commission that is proposing the election boundary changes is “independent.” However, these three individuals were appointed by government- at least two of them by the Speaker of the House of Commons who happens to be a Liberal MP. So by placing the responsibility for this on the Trudeau government, I believe I am simply pinning the tail on the donkey here.)

My deepest sympathy, Doug. I am in the corner of St Catharines that used to be part of Niagara Centre and I too am being moved from that riding into the St Catharines one. I am going to be sorry to lose the two fine representatives from that riding, but at least I am not going into the looneybin riding. The last time tidings were redrawn it looked like we were going to be put there (at the time it was Tim Hudak’s riding) and I thought I was going to be physically sick. Luckily, that didn’t happen at that time.
I drive through Wellandport on a regular basis, I call it Stepford town. At election time, it seems like every house has a Conservative sign out front.
I thought that ridings were decided on a regular basis by an independent non-partisan group, so I was surprised to see your comments blaming Trudeau for this. What have I missed?
I am glad to see you back after your health issues and I wish there were fewer issues to get us both steamed up.
A Reply from Doug Draper – In theory, Paty, you are right that it should be an independent panel. But from everything I have read and heard over the past number of years, nothing happens in Ottawa without Trudeau’s approval ….. So I am laying this one where the buck stops.
