A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper, publbisher, NAL

You don’t have to follow he news from the American side of the border too much to arrive at the conclusion that the country, which has long branded itself “the world’s greatest democracy”, is sliding down a slippery, slimy slope to full-fledged fascism.
Despite all the damaging evidence coming out about Trump and his cult followers at those Jan. 6 Congressional hearings, the common wisdom among pundits on all sides of the political spectrum in the U.S. is that the Republicans, which have become the party of Trumpism, will win this coming November’s mid-term elections.
That means that by the beginning of next year the ‘Party of Trump’ will hold a majority of seats in the U.S. Congress and Senate which will put an end to the current President, Joe Biden, and his Democrats passing anything else in the way of progressive form.
It also means that the Republicans will continue their campaign to restrict voting rights for African Americans and other groups that are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates. That will make it far easier for Trump or someone else like him to win back the White House in 2024.
Meanwhile, the extremists Trump and previous Republican presidents appointed to the Supreme Court are busy stripping away women’s rights and are poised to ban contraception and same-sex marriage.
Just last week, this same majority on the Supreme Court also gutted measures in the U.S. Clean Air Act for reducing climate-ravaging carbon emissions and this fall they are expected to tear the teeth out of the Clean Water Act which, when it was enacted five decades ago, was looked upon as leading piece of environmental protection legislation around the world.
The gutting of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts – this coming from a bunch on the Supreme Court that claims to be “pro-life – is also bad news for Canada and for our Great Lakes since poisons discharged to the air and to water bodies have no boundaries.
So it is hard to know what to say to my American friends this Fourth of July Independence Day except maybe, enjoy what is left of your independence while you can because the oligarch is coming back and he’s madder than King George.
The world, including Canada, which found itself suddenly being listed as a “security threat” in Trump world, caught a glimpse of the future in America when Trump was the president the first time around, and it was horrible.
God Help Us All!

Trump to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during a meeting between the two about four years ago – “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?”
(For the record, it was the British that burned the White House during the War of 1812. It was Trump who encouraged a mob of his followers to sack the U.S. Capitol Building more than 200 years later.)

I agree in total with your article. I watched this clown for years climbing to power on red hats. It is in total, frightening!

Excellent point. Certainly looks that way. The November elections will probably be the final nail.

They traded their freedoms for a red hat.
I cannot comprehend Trump’s appeal. He has no charisma, is ignorant of history and the workings of a democracy, a known con man/criminal, misogynist, white supremacist and demagogue. He certainly is not even an attractive man or an orator who can inspire anyone except the “uneducated” (who he admitted he loves). He would not condescend even to be seen with his followers but they treat him as some kind of messiah. If I was religious I would call him the antichrist..
Unfortunately there are a lot of people in own own country who believe his brand of crazy. We are not immune. I despise the clowns who drive around with all the flags crying out for freedom. I have yet to figure out what freedoms they lack. Perhaps they need to go to Ukraine for a real freedom fight.
Whether someone likes or dislikes out PM, since when were Canadians so uncivil as to have flags and banners saying “F*** Trudeau”. I always thought Canadians were better than that. American influence is corrupting the soul of our nation too. I just don’t get it. Wish I could take a chain saw to the 49th parallel and let them float away on their sea of corruption.
In honor of July 4th, they can’t even have a parade without a mass shooting. Time for a 2nd civil war. Maybe all the crazies can congregate in their bit of the nation and the sane folks in theirs. One SICK society.

US Culture: Trump is an entertainer with a large fan base (less without Twitter now). Since the 60s and the spread of television, most everything has shifted to being some form of entertainment, especially politics. Toss in a lot of conservative money and support and you get a cult figure. He’s just the symptom though; the figurehead of a sick society. It’s the Republicans and their voters that are scary.
