Get Ready for ‘PREMIER DOUG FORD’ – The Sequel

Short of a Miracle, Ford and his Conservatives are on the Verge of Winning Another Commanding Majority

Climate Action and Affordable Communities for Generations  Now And  For Generations To Come,          Be Damned!

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter Doug Draper

Posted May 27th, 2022 on Niagara At Large

Once upon a time, at least some of us across Niagara and Ontario hoped that our health care, our natural heritage and other valued community services and resources would fall into safer, more caring hands following this spring’s provincial election.

But that was once upon a time, and now, within one week of the finish of that election, and there is little doubt now that Doug Ford and his Conservatives are on the verge of winning another four-year term in government.

Please don’t get me wrong. I would give up almost everything outside of my immediate family and prize record collection to wake up a week from not, this Friday, to read that Ontario’s New Democrats won a majority government in this election and that the Green Party won a few more seats.

But we can talk about hope and keeping faith all we want – and I have had plenty of people email me or phone me in recent days saying “don’t give up hope,” “keep the faith” and “don’t believe the polls” all we want, the facts out there and continuous, almost daily tracking polls from some of the best pollsters in the country show that, outside of a massive swing among voters within the next five or six days, Ford and his Conservatives are going to possibly win an even larger majority than they did in June of 2018.

Part of the thanks for that, in my view are the weak leadership of Liberal’s leader, Steven Del Duca, and the NDP’s leader (running as leader for her fourth and possibly last time), Andrea Horwath. The lame campaign run by Horwath, in particular, has not done the four good NDP candidates here in Niagara – Jeff Burch in Niagara Centre, Jennie Stevens in St. Catharines, Wayne Gates in Niagara Falls and Dave Augustyn in Niagara West, any favours.

If some or all of the NDP candidates in Niagara win their ridings, it will be, in my view, little or no thanks to Horwath who, in campaign news releases, has repeatedly put her name and herself ahead of  people working on the ground in her party.

So let’s get back to Doug Ford.

If he wins a second term of government, he may very likely feel more emboldened than he ever has before when it comes to cutting environmental protection, privatizing health care services and on and on.

And if he wins, my message to those who voted for him will be this – “Please don’t complain and blubber to the rest of us when your services are cut, because you voted for this.”

In other words, if you voted for Doug Ford and you end up losing services or safety nets that you need, you have no right to complain.

Having said all of this, I continue to encourage each and every one  of you who wants something better than Ford has shoveled us over the past four years to go out and vote – especially young people because when it comes to issues like climate change and affordable communities to live in, it is your future.

If you don’t like what Ford and his Conservatives have dished out over the past four years, and you don’t like the platform they have put forward to pave over more of our green space with highways and low-density sprawl – if you don’t want more of that and you don’t vote, then maybe you don’t have any right to complain.

In the meantime, the outcome of this June 2nd’s Ontario election for anyone outside of the forces of the greediest of the greedy in the big businesses, land speculators and developers,  and captains in the  corporate community looks pretty damn bleak.

Reply from Doug Draper at NAL – To borrow a little more from the Wizard of Oz, I certainly hope that Toto pulls back the curtain after all the votes are counted and you are right Faye. To Oz.
