A Target of Greedy Developers – Niagara’s Waverly Woods Receives CBC Attention as a “Priceless” Place of Green

Why Aren’t Governments at All Levels Doing More to Save this Precious Place in Fort Erie, Ontario? Could it Be that They Don’t Really Care?

A Brief News Commentary by Doug Draper

“It’s disturbing actually … there are some things that are priceless,” Marcie Jacklin, a Fort Erie resident, national award-winning naturalist and head of an ever-growing citizens group called Community Voices of Fort Erie was quoted saying in a CBC story this March 23rd story.

Inside the canopy of Waverly Woods, a well-worn path winds through. How long will it last?

Unfortunately, what most other polical representatives at the local, regional and higher government levels had to say about the possible loss of this great treature – Waverly Woods – to a 10-storey condo building was weak and feckless.

It is citizens, now putting their names on the line by the thousands and tens-of-thousands, who are speaking out for this wonderful place full of wildlife and history along the shores of Lake Erie in Fort Erie, Ontario.

One of the many who make Waverly Woods their home

Now this jewel of a  site, where so many people have been drawn to walk and find peace with nature during the pandemic, is on the chopping block during a provincial hearing scheduled to begin this April.

And if it is to be saved, it is a dedicated group of citizens, supported by a team of experts, that will save it – little or no thanks to others in the private sector or government.

This Wednesday, March 23rd, CBC posted a detailed article on what is at stake for all of us at Waverly Woods. Please read it by clicking on – https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/fort-erie-harbourtown-village-1.6391454
