QUEEN’S PARK — NDP MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) re-tabled her bill Wednesday that prioritizes veterans for long-term care beds, making sure veterans and their families can access care when they need it.
“Seniors who need the support of a long-term care home should be able to quickly find one in their community. That’s especially true for the many veterans who have sacrificed so much for their country, who are now languishing on long waitlists to be able to get the care they need,” said Stevens.
“My bill would honour their sacrifice and service by making sure they can access care as soon as they need it.”
Stevens first introduced the bill in 2018 in order to honour the sacrifices of veterans by ensuring timely access to long-term care services as they age. The bill passed second reading with support from all parties, but the Ford government chose to delete the bill by refusing to give it its final vote before proroguing the house earlier this year.
“All parties supported my bill three years ago when I first introduced it, but since then the Ford government has refused to move it forward and show real action to support our veterans,” said Stevens.
“Ontario should have a plan to provide all seniors and veterans with high quality, not-for-profit long term care. Only New Democrats have a plan for long-term care that treats seniors with dignity and provides the high quality care that families in Niagara need.”
Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates brought forward an example of a man Stevens’ bill would help. Earlier this week Gates raised the plight of Burd Sisler, a 106 year old Second World War veteran who has been waiting months (https://mailchi.mp/50e5b634fbb6/106-year-old-veteran-deserves-long-term-care-bed-gates) for a long-term care bed.
