QUEEN’S PARK – Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath released the following statement regarding the 10-cent change to Ontario’s minimum wage, which took effect today:
“Minimum wage workers in Ontario have seen the cost of living skyrocket past their wages, and every month they have to make tough decisions around paying their rent, affording medicine and putting food on the table.
The Liberals froze the minimum wage for years, only increasing it as a last-minute election ploy, and one of Doug Ford’s first acts as premier was to hurt workers by cancelling a long-overdue increase.
Now, after a year and a half of very difficult pandemic working conditions, Ford is insulting these workers with an 80-cent per day increase, before taxes. Ford called them heroes during the pandemic — but he’s here for his buddies, not for them.
The NDP committed to a $15 liveable wage tied to inflation back in April 2016 – and we should be well past that benchmark now.
No one who works full time should be struggling to make ends meet or living in poverty, all workers in Ontario deserve to receive a decent wage that let’s them build their lives in our great province.”
