“Instead of helping to cut costs, Justin Trudeau is letting young people be saddled with student debts the size of mortgages. And the pandemic has only made things worse.” – Melissa McGlashan Federal NDP candidate for the Niagara Centre Riding

NIAGARA, Ontario – During an event this (past Saturday, August 27th , Jagmeet Singh (Federal Leader of the NDP) promised to tackle Justin Trudeau’s national student debt crisis.
The NDP candidates in the Niagara region, Melissa McGlashan (Niagara Centre), Trecia McLennon (St. Catharines) and Brian Barker (Niagara Falls), are committed to helping young people get ahead in life.
“Instead of helping to cut costs, Justin Trudeau is letting young people be saddled with student debts the size of mortgages. And the pandemic has only made things worse,” said McGlashan. “The NDP will make sure young people aren’t snowed under by student debt so they can have a bright future.”
“More than half of Canada’s undergraduates are struggling to pay off nearly $30,000 in student debt. In the last six years Justin Trudeau has collected more than $4 billion in interest from student loans,” said McLennon. “The NDP has fought for students, and won, and we’re going to keep fighting to make life affordable.”
In the midst of the pandemic, Jagmeet and the NDP fought and won supports for students.
Today, Jagmeet pledged to forgive up to $20,000 of student loan debt, remove interest from federal loans, and double federal student grants. He also committed to giving new graduates a five-year head start before having to make any federal loan payments.
“The NDP will stand up for students and forgive student debt so they can have a better head start for a brighter future,” added Barker. “Unlike the Liberals, the NDP will help young people get ahead in life.”
Justin Trudeau’s government has charged Canadians more than $4 billion in interest on student loans. And, under his watch, more than half of university graduates in Canada now carry student debt, with the average loan hitting $28,000.

It’s disappointing to see that the NDP has to resort to peddling misinformation, but this is categorically false. #Budget2021 pledges to waive interest on student loans for an additional year, and double the Canada Student Grant for 2 more years.
Further, we are continuing to support students by providing more flexibility on the repayment of federal student loans, so no one has to make a payment they can’t afford. I’m curious to know exactly how Mr. Singh gets the impression that this is “profiting.”
We have been, and will continue to be there for our youth and our students. We are moving #ForwardForEveryone
