Doug Ford’s ‘Toxic Anti-Climate Agenda’ Threatens Our Collective Future

‘Every Policy Decision Made Needs To Have Climate At Its Core Because We’re Out Of Time!’

A Message from Ontario’s Green Party

Posted August 14th, 2021 on Niagara At Large

This August 9th, the (United Nation’s) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report predicting that we’re headed straight towards climate disaster if we continue with the status quo.

What’s the status quo?

It’s (Ontario Premier) Doug Ford subsidizing fossil fuels, cancelling renewable energy contracts and supercharging urban sprawl.

It’s the NDP voting in support of pipelines like Line 5 — and the Liberals not even bothering to vote.

We’re already feeling the impact of the climate emergency right here in Ontario. This summer has been marked by rampant forest fires, record heat waves and brutally poor air quality.

And this is just the tip of the melting iceberg.

As the IPCC report shows, severe weather events are only going to get more frequent and more severe.

Tell Doug Ford to act immediately on climate change

Doug Ford’s toxic anti-climate agenda and half measures from the status quo parties will not address the climate crisis we are in.

We need to treat an emergency like an emergency.

As Green Party leader Mike Schriener said earlier: Ontario Greens have solutions.

Solutions like stamping out sprawl [4], which is a leading driver of climate pollution in Ontario and paves over the wetlands and green spaces that protect us.

Solutions like stopping subsidies to fossil fuels and saying no to pipelines like Line 5 (an aging pipeline caring tar sands product through the Great Lakes from Alberta).

And like rapidly electrifying transportation and retrofitting our buildings to be more energy efficient.

We need to become a global leader in clean tech. And invest in the caring professions so no one is left behind.

We can do this in a way that creates good jobs, enhances health and improves life.

The time for talk, discussions, empty promises, half measures and compromises is long past.

Every policy decision made needs to have climate at its core.

Thank you to everyone who already added their voice this week, and if you haven’t yet, join me in telling Doug Ford to take immediate climate action and avoid the worst of the impending climate catastrophe.

Sincerely, Becky Smit, Green Party of Ontario
