ST. CATHARINES, Ontario – NDP MPP for St. Catharines Jennie Stevens is supporting Niagara Region Chief Medical Officer Mustafa Hirji’s request for the province to allow Niagara Public Health to create and administer a vaccination plan in long-term care homes and retirement homes in Niagara.

On Tuesday January 5th, 2021), Dr. Hirji requested a public health led vaccination campaign that will actually get vaccinations in the arms of vulnerable seniors in long-term care.

“Today (January 5th), Niagara heard crickets when it came to the Ford government discussing their vaccination plan for Ontario. For weeks, residents in Niagara and myself have been highlighting the sluggish and vague vaccine rollout. If the premier is not going to put forward a vaccination plan that includes Niagara, then he needs to let our Niagara Public Health experts lead a vaccination campaign for the region”, says Stevens.

Niagara Region’s Medical Health Officer wants to put together a vaccination plan for Niagara if Ford and company will let him? Meanwhile, Ford seems more interested in shielding his pals in the private sector long-term care home industry from any legal liability for their shortcomings in caring for our seniors.

“We have dates and numbers of vaccines, and so is reasonable to have a schedule for when every long-term care resident in Niagara will be offered their shot,” added Stevens.

Niagara has one of the oldest populations when compared to the rest of the province. Niagara seniors account for 23 per cent of its total population compared to 18 per cent in Ontario. In Niagara, we have 25 active outbreaks in long term care and retirement homes, and 33 residents have died from COVID-19 in the last two weeks.

“In Niagara we have a crisis in long-term care as COVID-19 is spreading through our homes threatening the lives of our seniors. Despite having months to prepare for a vaccine this government still does not have a plan for Niagara. Ford needs to call our Niagara Public Health experts today to allow them to give Niagara the vaccination campaign and the plan that the province is not.”
