Former Toronto Mayor David Crombie – Also a former Federal Conservative MP and Cabinet Minister – Has Long Championed Environmentally Sustainable Development in Ontario
“It is now clear that the (Ford) Government’s direction under Schedule 6 of Bill 229 (of its 2020 Budget Bill, due to be passed as soon as Monday, December 7th) disastrously assaults (and cuts out the heart of integrated watershed planning and management; severely cripples the Conservation Authorities in the pursuit of their historic stewardship of environmental issues, and now with the grossly expanded use of Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZO) and other procedural revisions, essential public discussion and debate will be stifled or shut down.” – from Ontario Greenbelt Council Chair David Crombie’s December 5th’s letter of resignation to Ontario Premier Doug Ford
A News Release from Environmental Defence, followed by a response to this resignation from Ontario’s Official Opposition Party

Statement by Environmental Defence’s Executive Director Tim Gray, on resignation of David Crombie, Chair of Ontario’s Greenbelt Council, in protest of the Ontario government’s attack on wetlands, flood protection and future prosperity
It is a great shame and a loss to the people of Ontario that David Crombie, the Chair of the provincially appointed Greenbelt Council, had no alternative but to resign today. His resignation comes as a direct result of Minister Steve Clark’s refusal to listen to the Council’s advice and remove Schedule 6 from Bill 229 (the budget bill).
In the words of Mr. Crombie: “It cuts out the heart of integrated watershed planning and management; severely cripples the Conservation Authorities in the pursuit of their historic stewardship of environmental issues, and now with the grossly expanded use of Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZO) and other procedural revisions, essential public discussion and debate will be stifled or shut down.”
Mr. Crombie and the Council have been key thinkers and advisors to the Ontario government on how to best protect farmland, natural features and economic prosperity. It is tragic that their impartial advice has been ignored and overridden by the self-serving demands of developers.
Mr. Crombie concludes in his letter: “This is not policy and institutional reform. This is high-level bombing and needs to be resisted.”
It is not too late for the Ontario government to finally listen to the advice of the Council and remove the attacks on our future, contained in Schedule 6 of the budget bill. All Ontarians are watching.

Now Here Is a Response to David Crombie’s Resignation from Ontario’s NDP Official Opposition Party –
Crombie calls the Ford government’s amended Bill 229 – aimed at gutting Ontario’s Conservation Authorities – “high-level bombing” of the environment
Greenbelt Chair’s Resignation an indictment of Ford – Ontario NDP Climate Crisis critic
TORONTO — Peter Tabuns, NDP critic for Energy and the Climate Crisis, has issued the following statement regarding the resignation of David Crombie from the Greenbelt Council Saturday evening, which Crombie writes is in response to Doug Ford’s amended Bill 229 – which Crombie calls the Ford government’s “high-level bombing” of the environment:
“This shocking resignation is an indictment of Doug Ford and his continued war on conservation, the Greenbelt, and the environment.
“The Ford Government is attacking conservation authorities, attacking science, and dragging us even further back in the battle to avoid the scariest impacts of climate change. We agree with David Crombie’s assessment that Ford’s attack on conservation authorities is no less than a ‘high-level bombing.’
“People have had enough of Ford working for powerful developers and not in the best interests of the province, and our kids’ futures. We call on Doug Ford again to reverse these changes and stop their plans to let developers attack the environment.”

In a video leaked to the public later, Ontario Premier Doug Ford – then still running in the 2018 election – tells a group of developers what his Conservative Party really wants to do with the province’s internationally-praised Greenbelt.

Despite more than 10,000 expressions of concerns flooding the inboxes of Ford and company, Ford’s government plans to move forward with final approval of its 2020 Budget Bill, with legislation embedded in it that is designed to gut our Conservation Authorities and advance the fortunes of Ontario’s greedy development industry as soon as this Monday, December 7th.
Contact your Ontario member of parliament as soon as possible and urge them not to do it.
