“Particularly now, as the virus surges in parts of the country, it’s critical that we continue to wear masks and take the simple everyday measures that reduce the spread — stay distant and wash your hands often.” – New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo

A Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –
During these perilous times, as we watch an upswing – bearing all the earmarks of a second wave – in the number of daily COVID-19 case counts in our own Province of Ontario, we can also turn on cable news and watch the madness in Trump’s America where, for Republicans, wearing a mask is a sign of weakness and betrayal to the dear leader, and where COVID cases are flaming into a third wave there.
Yet not all has morphed into a sequel of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” south of the border.
Here in Niagara, Ontario, we are blessed to have, as our nearest American neighbour, a U.S state with a governor who has earned praise around the world (if not from Trump Republicans in his own country), for rallying citizens from Manhattan to Albany to Buffalo, New York to exercise the protective measures necessary to beat the COVID-19 curve down.
We are fortunate in Niagara to live next door to a state run by a governor who has truly taken the pandemic threat we are all facing seriously … so much so, that it is too bad there is not a way that we could at least open the border to Ontarians and New Yorkers only. Because the border falls under federal jurisdiction, however, that is not possible.
I have posted some of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s messages to his citizens on Niagara At Large before because I felt that at least some of what he has to say to his citizens is important for us to hear to.
This latest message, about the importance of continuing to wear masks while this killer virus is working on a major comeback, is one of those – especially at a time when we in Niagara and other parts of Ontario have at least some citizens and elected politicians who, for whatever reason, are not taking mask wearing and the threat we are all facing particularly seriously.
Just this October 26th, we were treated to a disturbing photo of Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, in a gathering of completely maskless people, indoors and none of them social distancing, which defies even the health guidelines his governing Conservative Party has been promoting.
Here is an MPP, who also serves as an assistant to Ontario’s Education Minister at a time when grade students are being urged to wear masks and abide by other safety measures in the classroom, and he put on a display like this.
Then we have some of our regional politicians like West Lincoln Mayor David Bylsma, saying no to mandatory mask bylaws or at least questioning why such bylaws are needed. You can’t help but wonder if these folks are zoned out to the reality around them, or have some odd death wish.
So the following message from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is a good and most timely one for people in his state – some who I’m proud to say are among our NAL readers – and for people in our own Province of Ontario.
Here it is –
Dear Fellow New Yorker,
As we continue to fight against COVID-19, it’s clear that masks help stop the spread and save lives.
I’m proud to announce with my daughter Mariah Kennedy Cuomo that New York is partnering with the company The RealReal and dozens of New York fashion designers to create limited edition made-in-New-York masks.
Drawing from the diversity and creativity that New York’s fashion industry is famous for, these unique masks will benefit COVID-19 relief efforts and remind the public that we all still need to Mask Up.
Profits from this campaign will be donated to Feeding America, Nurse Heroes and the New York COVID Relief Fund to help New Yorkers and Americans in need.
