This Natural Gem in Fort Erie and others Across Niagara Are Worth Far More than Cement and Asphalt
A Brief Intro by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large
Posted March 28th, 2020
Niagara, Ontario – In these perilous times we are living through at the moment, it gives me a little joy to run the following good message from Marcie Jacklin, a resident of Fort Erie, Ontario and one of this Niagara region’s great conservationists.
Marcie is a leading member of a citizens group called Community Voices of Fort Erie which is continuing to fight a plan by a developer to build a residential complex in the Waverly Woods area near and along the shores of Lake Erie, and I am hopeful that with support from the rest of us, they will win.
As bad as what we are going through with this killer virus outbreak now, I am feeling optimistic that many of us – not all, but many of us, including more of our politicians and people in the business and development community – will come out the other side of this terrible ordeal with a different perspective about nature and about what really matters the most.
If we think about what really matters in this world, and we enough of us work at it, I think we can join arms, and more of our politicians will join arms with us, in convincing developers that a treasured woods, or meadow or wetlands, is no longer a place where we can pour more pavement.
Let’s make a pledge right now, while we’ve got lots of time at home to give what matters serious thought. to work together to do it.
We can and must save this place and others like it for our future and the future of our kids.
Now here is a Message I would encourage you to read for the good of your soul from Marcie Jacklin and the Community Voices of Fort Erie –
COVID-19 and Saving Waverly Woods
Marcie Jacklin , Fort Erie, Canada, March 28th, 2020 —
I hope you and your families are managing the current situation. During these stressful times of COVID-19, nature can be one of our best friends.
Richard Loev, author of the book, LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS, has been promoting the importance of nature to our well-being since 2005, and now there is scientific evidence to prove it.
Research statistics confirm that time spent in green spaces can reduce the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stress and high blood pressure.
Physicians are getting behind this movement to look to nature for healing. The Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, CA has a Center for Nature and Health, with clinical programs that promote access to nature as part of patients’ care and overall well-being. Many doctors are now prescribing time in nature rather than pills.
This scientifically based evidence underlines the importance of preserving our natural spaces in order to maintain the health of our community. These areas are fast disappearing from our landscape, with the amount of development currently underway. Please be sure to let your politicians know that a healthy community needs green spaces in order to thrive.
There is an abundance of information on the health benefits of nature. Here are a few links that may be of interest if you want to find out more:
