Ontario NDP and Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath
QUEEN’S PARK, Toronto — “In Wednesday’s fiscal update for the province, the NDP hopes to see strong supports for people, small businesses and health care — the direct support needed to help see Ontarians through the COVID-19 pandemic.
We hope to see a financial statement that includes our plan to send $2,000 Ontario Emergency Income cheques to households experiencing unemployment or lost income due to the COVID-19 crisis. What’s needed is direct funding, flowing to people and small businesses right away, before the rent is due, and before the cupboards are bare.”
AFootnote from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large –
As with emergency assistance federal and municipal governments are pledging to people and businesses at this very difficult time, let’s hope that Ontario’s Ford government makes it a priority to help people and businesses that are particularly vulnerable and need that help the most.
As has happened with past crises, one can imagine at least some larger corporations, with their bounty socked away in off-shore tax havens, using their formidable lobby powers to take advantage of this one. This should not be an opportunity for lining the pockets of corporate bosses and their shareholders.
Along the many everyday people who will need help paying for food and shelter through this, there are smaller, locally owned businesses that are the backbone of our communities and that survive, at the best of times, on much thinner margins, that should get the assistance from our governments first.
