Good News for the New Year – Greta and her Youth Movement Are On The Way!

The Days of Aging Boomers like Donald Trump and Doug Ford Ravaging the World are Rapidly Fading

A Brief Commentary by Niagara at Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper

Posted December 28th, 2019 on Niagara At Large

As Bob Dylan once sang to a then youthful generation of Baby Boomers that since has gone so sour – “The times they are a changin’.”

As the song goes  in a message to the Boomer’s parents – “Your old road is rapidly aging. Please get outta’ the new one if you can’t lend a hand.”

Today these ‘get-out-of-the-way’ lyrics are  suited, not to their parents, but to the same generation of aging Boomers – to the likes of Doug Ford and Donald Trump, and to all of the mostly white members of the Boomer population who support them.

An aging white Republican congressman holds up a smowball on the floor of Congress during an unusually cold day in Washington, D.C. to make a joke about climate change

They are aimed squarely in the direction of that aging Boomer and to all who laugh with him  as he stands there making joke about “global warming” while holding a snowball during a freak late-spring snowfall,  even in the face of a climate emergency that threatens  to wipe out life as we know it on this planet if we don’t act to turn it around now.

There is real cause for hope though.

Fortunately, Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist from Sweden, who was chosen Time Magazine’s 2019 ‘Person of the Year’, and countless millions of her young supporters around the world are stepping up to do what older generations are failing or refusing to do.

There is the hope for the future.

  1. Well, Doug, and what generation do you belong to?
In any case it’s not really about age or aging, is it, but about one’s ability to think critically and analytically regardless of the topic and whatever time we may live in; and that means showing tolerance and acceptance of a variety of views and ideologies as much as we may disagree with them (and should disagree with them if that is one’s choice); unfortunately you expose a rather shocking and all too familiar “leftist tactic” of blame for society’s ills on those who may simply disagree with you, whether its politics, climate change or whatever; so our world is being “ravaged” by” the likes of Doug Ford and Donald Trump” and “the mostly white members of the Boomer population” ; hopefully those capable of thinking for themselves can choose or not choose to support the Fords or Trumps of the world for their own reasons (whatever color they may be!); and your “mostly white members” comment is nothing but “racist” and what one would expect from FAKE NEWS outlets like CNN.

A Response from Doug Draper – In answer to the question Tony asks at the head of his comment, I was born in the 1950s so that makes me a Baby Boomer.
I think that it also gives me a right to say, based on all of the tracking polls I have followed in recent Canadian and American elections, that a disproportionate number of white men from my generation and those my generation has followed have been voting for Conservative Party candidates in this country and Republic candidates in the U.S., knowing full well that over the past two or three decades, these parties have had a demonstrated track record of gutting environmental protection policies and programs.
Sorry if some think that pointing this out constitutes “racism” and “fake news.”

Greta Thunberg has been accused of criticizing but not offering solutions. On the contrary, she is the change she is seeking. Greta has written a book, No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference. In August of 2018, she decided not to go to school one day. Her actions ended up sparking a global movement for action to mitigate the climate crisis. As she did, she also inspired millions of others to students to strike for our environment. In doing so she forced governments to listen as they had not listened before.
Interestingly, this young girl, not limited by her Asperger’s but motivated to act in spite of it, was sarcastically Tweeted about by Donald Trump who only proved again how mean-spirited a man he is.
Undaunted she presses on by example showing us what each of us can do to at least help reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution. Gretta has stopped eating domestic beef, one of the largest planet polluters vis methane gas emissions. She sailed across the ocean rather than fly in a large pollution-making jetliner. She continues to speak out and encourage action by others. In short, she is “change in the making” and an example to those much older politicians who are doing little or nothing in their own right to fight climate change caused by human behavior.
Greta refuses to buy new when used will do and thus mitigates against the impact on our environment caused by the fashion industry and other manufacturers. She is an exemplary activist: doing, not just talking!
She shames the Trumps and Fords of the world, who, although they are white Boomers like me, attack on a personal level, feather their own nests, and work to undo all that has been done over the last decade to reduce greenhouse gases.
“And a child shall lead them.”
