A News Release from the Campaign to Elect Niagara Falls NDP candidate Brian Barker

NIAGARA FALLS – Niagara Falls NDP candidate Brian Barker affirmed his opposition to the building of the Trans Mountain pipeline and criticized the Trudeau government for their “hypocrisy” following the federal government’s announcement of the Cabinet’s approval of the Trans Mountain expansion project.
“Actions speak louder than words, and on this issue, the Trudeau government have shown themselves to be hypocrites,” Barker said in a statement. “You can’t declare a climate emergency one day and then build a pipeline the next. If we build this pipeline, there is no way we are going to hit the Paris accord’s emissions targets.”
“This is a sign that Trudeau and the Liberals are desperate to win votes in advance of the October election,” Barker explained. “But it’s bad public policy. This [pipeline] is a serious environmental threat, and there has been a total lack of concern for our Indigenous communities on this issue.”
“If you want to create good jobs in Niagara and across our country, you do it by investing in clean, renewable energy to create permanent, high-paying employment opportunities,” Barker said. “Our party’s plan will create over 300,000 middle class jobs, create a 100% electric public transit system, end subsidies to Big Oil, and ban single-use plastics while saving families money.”
