St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens urges Ontario’s Ford Government to take action to prevent rent increases that would hurt large numbers of people
A News Release from the Constituency Office of St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens

St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens stands up at Queens Park Wednesday morning, asking Ford’s Government to make necessary changes to prevent rent increases across the Niagara Region.
On Monday (May 27th) a report was released, outlining the average monthly rental rates across Canada.
This report showed St. Catharines had moved up three spots, now making it the 9th most expensive city to rent in. The cost of a one bedroom rose 5.2 percent and the cost of a two bedroom rose 5 percent – well above what people’s wages rose by.
“It’s no secret that the Niagara Region is facing an affordable housing crisis, and an increase in rental rates will push people further into poverty and even homelessness” stated MPP Stevens, “yet this government gutted protections for renters and removed rent controls.”
With the opening of Niagara Regional Housing’s new affordable housing units located at 527 Carlton Street, 85 new units became available, only making a small dent however, in their current waitlist of over 5,500 people.
It’s been about 40 years since the last affordable housing units, solely owned and operated by Niagara Regional Housing, were built in St. Catharines. MPP Stevens demanded that the Premier allocate funding to assist the Niagara Region in building additional affordable housing units, and to stop ignoring the problem at hand.
