Women mourn for loved ones in wake of mass shootings.

Toronto, Ontario – Yesterday (March 14th), forty-nine Muslims were murdered while at prayer at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Upon learning this, Joel Reitman and Jeffrey Rosenthal, Co-Chairs of the National Board of Directors of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following:

“We condemn this vile act of terrorism targeting the Muslim community in the strongest possible terms and trust those responsible for this crime will be subject to the full force of the law,” said Joel Reitman, Co-Chair of the CIJA Board.

“We stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbours during this horrible, sad, and terrifying time, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this heinous crime.”

“This is a very dark day for those of us who care about the rule of law, plurality, acceptance, and religious freedom,” added Jeffrey Rosenthal, Co-Chair of the CIJA Board. “As Canadians, we are acutely aware that this is not the first time Muslims have been targeted while at prayer.”

“That these innocent victims were murdered in their house of worship adds an additional dimension of horror to a deeply tragic situation. On behalf of the entire organized Canadian Jewish community, we send our prayers and our condolences not just to the Muslim community in Christchurch, but to all our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world.”

Additional Background

  • CIJA and the Canadian Rabbinic Caucus will be undertaking a “Letter to my Muslim Neighbour” campaign, the objective of which is to connect Jews at the local level with Muslims in their communities and neighbourhoods to extend support, friendship, and solidarity at a time when Muslim Canadians are feeling especially vulnerable.
  • National Community Security Program (NCSP) professionals have been in contact with Canadian law enforcement who have indicated that there is no increased level of threat in Canada.

(Niagara At Large receives many releases from agencies and organizations each day and we chose to run this one, not only becauseNAL was on the list of media outlets that the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs chose to send it to, but because it is always heartening to see diverse groups support one another at times when horrible, hate-filled  acts like this occur. It gives one a bit of hope.)
