Bill S-203 Which Ends The Captivity Of Whales And Dolphins In Canada Has Passed Senate! Now we need it passed in Canada’s House of Commons.
A Call-Out from Niagara Action for Animals (NAFA)
Posted October 26th, 2018 on Niagara At Large
Dear friends of animals –
Two requests for quick emails to governmental reps to help black bear cubs and to help whales and dolphins.
FOR THE BEARS:
Emails needed to Manitoba Minister of Sustainable Development, the Honourable Rochelle Squires. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Manitoba Ministry of Sustainable Development will be releasing three orphaned bear cubs this fall. This can and has been done successfully in other jurisdictions.
However, it is critical that the cubs weigh over 80 pounds upon release to ensure that they are able to hibernate and emerge in a healthy condition in the spring. It is also critical that these animals be monitored using GPS collared so that their release can be assessed and measured.
The bear cubs need to be collared, so that their release can be fully and transparently evaluated and if necessary, the release criteria changed to improve their chances at successful reintroduction.
To assist the Ministry, Black Bear Rescue Manitoba (partnering with Zoocheck on this rehabilitation project) purchased three collars. Now the Ministry is refusing to allow their use. In addition, Ministry staff are refusing to allow observers to go along on the release.
Please ask the Minister to be open and transparent about the release of the cubs by:
- Ensuring that the cubs be released with GPS collars;
- Providing information about the size, health and weight of the cubs;
Allowing observers from the rehabilitation centre to attend the release of the cubs into the wild; and
- Working with rehabilitators, animal protection organizations and others to support the program.
