Niagara, Ontario – A case involving a $200,000 defamation suit the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and its former CAO and now Niagara Regional government CAO Carmen D’Angelo filed a year ago against St. Catharines resident and community activist Ed Smith finally began getting its day in an Ontario court in Welland this Monday, November 20th.
And in the same courtroom, presided over by Judge James Ramsay, arguments are also going back and forth over a counter suit for damages that Smith filed against the NPCA and D’Angelo earlier this year.
As if that isn’t enough for one court to handle, a libel and slander lawsuit Bill Montgomery, a Niagara-on-the-Lake marketing consultant, filed against Smith over NPCA related information the St. Catharines resident raised about him is also being heard.
Niagara At Large was in the court all day this November 20 and will be back this Tuesday, November 21st for what are expected to be the conclusion of arguments for or against these legal actions, and possibly for the Judge’s ruling – although it is certainly not out of the question that the Judge may give himself more time to consider the evidence and deliver his ruling on another day.
Given that, Niagara At Large will keep our readers up to date on the status of these cases and save our news commentary for a time – possibly as soon as this November 21st or 22nd – when we can put it all in news commentary that highlights what unfolded and discuss what the final decision of the Court may mean for an ongoing public campaign for change at the NPCA.
