Here Is A Must-Watch for All of Us – See the PBS Frontline documentary ‘ War on the EPA’ – this Wednesday, October 11th at 10 p.m.

A Call-Out from Doug Draper, journalist/publisher, Niagara At Large

Posted October 11, 2017 on Niagara At Large

Anyone living in Niagara, Ontario or any other region of Canada who believes that what Trump is doing to environmental programs in his country is no concern of ours is nursing a very wrong and dangerous assumption.

I have had some Niagara At Large readers say to me since the Trump presidency began last January with, among other things, promises by the orange hair monster to gut environmental programs and rip up the 2015 Paris climate summit accord, that this news and commentary site should not busy itself with any of that stuff because it is of little or no relevance to people living here.

To the contrary, the threat made by Trump and the God-awful choice of the person he picked to head up the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)– Oklahoma lawyer and Republican climate denying, neo-con Scott Pruitt – to virtually cancel federal funding for restoration projects for the Great Lakes could have a profound, negative impact on literally tens-of-millions of Americans and Canadians, including people in this region, who have a direct stake in the these fresh waters for their health and economic survival.

What Trump and Pruitt are continuing to do to ravage EPA’s programs and its overall budget, including  the Trump administration’s announcement as recently as this October 9th to trash former U.S. President Barack Obama’s Clean Energy Plan – a signature piece of legislation Obama put in place to curb pollution that contributes to climate change – is only of no relevance to us if it is true that the rapidly increasing frequency of more damaging and deadly wind storms, floods, droughts and wildfires have nothing to do with the climate altering gases we are collectively emitting to the earth’s atmosphere.

And it is getting to the point where you almost have to be a paid hack for the coal or petro-chemical industry, or a hard-core partisan member of the Republican Party in the U.S. or Conservative Party in Canada, or an ignoramus who binge watches garbage on Fox News or one of the deplorables who screams at anyone who is liberal-minded or non-white at Trump rallies, or all of the above if you believe that.

Which brings me to the broadcast of a special Frontline documentary, this Wednesday, October 11th at 10 a.m. on Buffalo’s PBS TV station WNED, I hope as many people as possible watch called ‘War on the EPA’ that highlights how dangerous the measures Trump is taking to dismantle this agency and the programs it is responsible for is for ALL OF US.

The cover of the New York Post this past June, after Trump announced plans to rip up Paris climate agreement

As a veteran journalist who spent much of my 38-year career covering environmental issues in and around the Great Lakes region, I cannot underestimate how important the work of the U.S. Environmental Agency has been in what progress we have made since the 1970s to turn around damage by pollution and other human activities that, at one point, almost saw Lake Erie choked to death with rotting algae and Lake Ontario and its wildlife and waters serving millions living around it poisoned by toxic chemicals to a point where no fish were edible and fish-eating birds, from bald eagles to gulls, were totally perished.

Since its founding around the time of the first Earth Day in 1970, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency earned a reputation as one of the leading edge government bodies around the world for research and action on threats to the natural systems that we and other species depend on for survival.

And now Trump and his billionaire pals who would rape what’s left of the planet’s resources at any cost, along with all the ignoramuses who want to drill and mine their way to a time and place where “America is great again” (whatever in hell that means)” have declared war on the EPA and all the scientists and environmental field workers who made it the great agency it was for decades.

Please watch the Frontline document, ‘War on the EPA’, at 10 p.m. this Wednesday (tonight), October 11th, on WNED PBS on Cogeco Cable Channel 21 in Niagara, Ontario or on whatever dial or number it is located on your satellite or cable server.

One response to “Here Is A Must-Watch for All of Us – See the PBS Frontline documentary ‘ War on the EPA’ – this Wednesday, October 11th at 10 p.m.

  1. Watched it and my response…. 😦

Pruitt, the Koch’s, Murray, etc. As if we weren’t aware of their machinations already. The problems are #1 – How many people know? They’re too lackadaisical to educate themselves and thus to act in their own best interests. This programme was preaching to the choir, and #2 – How many people give a shit? They care about the here and now, like smokers who say, I’ll never get cancer”. When they do it’s too late. The significant difference is that this affects everyone, not just (and including) the bad guys.
