Fort Erie, Ontario – The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association (CCFA) of Niagara invites local residents to celebrate friendship between Canada and Cuba with a BBQ, music and meet members of Cuba’s diplomatic mission to Canada. Toronto Consul of Cuba, Susana Malmierca, husband, Ramon Ramirez, also Consul of Cuba, Ingrid Izquierdo, husband Yuris Palacio and their families have been invited as special guests.
This event will take place Sunday, August 20th, 2:00 until 6:00 P.M. at the Niagara Parks Commission pavilion at Old Fort Erie. In honour of our guests and symbolic of Canada-Cuba friendship the Cuban flag will be raised beside the flag of Canada for the day.
Both consuls will be available to answer questions on Cuba’s latest developments. The celebration comes in the wake of increased interest in Cuba due to recent progress in US – Cuba relations….slightly reversed by the new Trump administration.
Regretfully His Excellency, Ambassador Julio Garmendía Peña, is unable to attend as planned, due to his recall to Havana. Garmendía Peña’s term in Canada is approaching the normal four years. A new ambassador to Canada has been appointed but will not arrive until about October.
The BBQ is not only a time to hi-light Cuban culture and remember good times and good friends met in Cuba on winter vacations but for CCFA Niagara it is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for local residents to volunteer in Cuba as part of the Canada-wide Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. In 2017 four Niagara residents joined the brigade. Next year we hope for several more. It is truly a life changing experience for many people.
Several Niagara Members of Parliament, Provincial Members of the Legislature and local municipal mayors, or their representatives will attend to meet the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in a casual, informal atmosphere.
Information about volunteering in Cuba will be available. Samples of Cuban food and Cuban music will be on offer.
Tickets are $10. Call 905-382-3468 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org A limited number will be available at the door.
The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara is celebrating its 17th anniversary as an organization of local volunteers which promotes friendship and solidarity between the Canadian and Cuban peoples through educational and cultural activities.
Come and join the good times, Sunday, August 20th.
