Queen’s Park, Toronto –MPP Sam Oosterhoff is inviting Grade 7 and 8 students in the provincial riding of Niagara West-Glanbrook to apply to the legislative page program.

“The prestigious program is ideal for ambitious, responsible and community-driven youth,” said Oosterhoff. “It is a wonderful and unique learning experience.”

Selected students will have the chance to work at Queen’s Park during sittings, serving as messengers, and delivering documents to MPPs, among other important duties.

“The page program was an amazing opportunity, which both nurtured, and developed my now considerable interest in Canadian politics. Over these fascinating three weeks, I made memories I will never forget, and got to connect with fellow students across the province, with whom I shared many interests,” said St. John C.E.S. student Luca DPietro, who served as a page in the Spring legislative session.

“This experience taught me about Legislative process, while being able to encounter first-hand the key parliamentary figures in action. The position comes with a large number of responsibilities, though many rewards as well. I would recommend the position to any grade 7 or 8 student who has an interest in politics and current affairs, and is up to the challenge of participating in this wonderful educational experience.”

Approximately 140 students across Ontario, with a grade average of 80 per cent or higher, will be chosen. The pages get a leave of absence from school, full tutoring and an honorarium of $15 per day for their term of duty.

“I encourage students interested in learning first-hand how this province is run to apply,” said Oosterhoff. “I look forward to welcoming a page from our riding, as well as treating him or her to lunch in the Legislative Dining Room.”

The deadline for applying as a page for the Fall Parliamentary session is June 15. For further information, or to apply, please visit http://discoveryportal.ontla.on.ca/en/youth-programs/page-program/about-program.
