Ontarians Deserve A $15 Minimum Wage

A Statement from Ontario NDP Labour Critic and Welland Riding MPP Cindy Forster

Posted March 24rth, 2017 on Niagara At Large

Niagara, Ontario – Cindy Forster, Ontario NDP Labour Critic and MPP for Welland,  issued the following statement in response to the announcement made today by the Minister of Labour:

“Ontarians deserve nothing less than a $15 minimum wage, because someone who goes to work 40 hours each week shouldn’t be struggling below the poverty line. Too many people are working two or more low wage, part-time jobs just to pay their hydro bills and to put food on the table.

Premier Wynne doesn’t get that families can’t survive on the current minimum wage. Unstable employment is having‎ a devastating impact on women, racialized people and immigrants. Now is the time for a ‎$15 minimum wage for Ontario.”

A liveable wage has been an ongoing push for Niagara area MPP Cindy Forster and Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath,, pictured here.

  1. Great, if min wage goes up to $15.00 per, myself and hundreds like me that make anymore from $12.00 to $14.99 will be making Minimum wage instead as currently above it.
Every year min wage has been going up, so does the cost of living, but our employers are not Keeping up with the Cost of living – nor do they have to!
Why don’t they fix the other loopholes in our labour law’s which allow an employer to work up to 88 Consecutive hours, 12 Consecutive day’s and can do it without having to pay any over time, Yes they can do it?
Fix the loop hole that allow’s employers to change the schedule on the employee that doesn’t want to work a stat Holiday so they have to work one of the other day’s they would of had off that week, so the employee still only get there regular two or in some cases one day off that week ( this only applies to those that work shift work )?
Fix the loophole that allows the employer to add extra breaks – then extend the work day, so instead of an 8 hr day at the job they have 8.5, 9 hrs plus?
Fix the loophole that they are NOT paying employee’s for the time it takes to log into a computer or setup their cash float at the beginning of the shift? I could go on…..

It will be quite good if we see a raise to $15/hour. It would be better if the raise was given from Oct 2017. Last time it was 15 cents and this time it was just 20 cents. I was expecting this time for atleast $ 12.75. …. Here people have to struggle very hard to survive. … I am totally not satisfied by the raise this year and raise for the last year.
    With best regards,
    Inder Paul
