From the Office of Niagara Falls Riding MPP Wayne Gates

Queen’s Park, Ontario – Wayne Gates NDP MPP for Niagara Falls, rose in the House today and condemned the Liberal Government for their mismanagement and consistent inaction to address the number one concern for the residents of Ontario—outrageous hydro rates.
“I want to rise and talk about the hydro crisis, and I want to say who it’s hurting in the province of Ontario? It is hurting seniors, young families, young people, manufacturers, business owners, small and large.”
“We know that the CEO of Hydro One is making $4.3 million a year. Think about that. Then he says he feels our pain. Can you imagine somebody making $4 million a year and he feels the pain of families and manufacturers in the province of Ontario? If you take a look at Manitoba, which is publicly funded, publicly owned, he’s making $400,000 a year,” said Gates.
“And then I say to the Premier, who also says she feels our pain, that she has an obligation in the province of Ontario to make sure that hydro is affordable. That’s your job/”
Recently Gates has highlighted the $4 million compensation package for the current CEO of Hydro One in a series of online videos he posted to his Facebook page which were collectively viewed over one million times.
The widespread online videos have sparked outrage amount Ontarians who consistently see their hydro rates increase each month. Gates notes other Canadian provinces with entirely publicly owned hydro distributors do not have CEOs with such exorbitant salary and compensation packages.
Gates argued that Ontario was losing good-paying jobs because of high rates when he was heckled by members of the Liberal Government who said that wasn’t true.
“It’s absolutely true, and it’s unfortunate that that side of the House doesn’t understand what the people in this gallery, what they’re feeling up here, are feeling in the province of Ontario,” said Gates in response.
