Niagara, Ontario’s Regional Government Aims More Heat At Illegal Dumpers

 News from Niagara Region

Niagara Region – June 18, 2014 – Niagara Region and the local area municipalities are working together to decrease acts of illegal dumping on municipal and Regional property. Regional Chair Gary Burroughs and Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Dave Eke were on site at Homer Rd. and Glendale Ave.,Illegal Dumping sign Niagara-on-the-Lake, to announce the re-launch of Niagara’s Illegal Dumping Campaign, which features signs that encourage the reporting of illegal dumping activities in illegal dumping hot spots throughout Niagara.

“It’s important to make it easy for residents to report illegal dumping. With our online reporting tool and new signs in illegal dumping hotspots, we can increase the awareness around the areas where people commonly illegally dump garbage and ultimately increase the public’s ability to report it when they see these activities taking place,” said Regional Chair Gary Burroughs.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping that is taking place or report materials found after they have been illegally dumped. Residents who report illegal dumping are eligible for a reward of up to $200.

“Illegal dumping is a blight on our rural roads and detrimental to our natural habitat,” stated Lord Mayor Dave Eke. “On behalf of our Town Council, I am pleased to work with Niagara Region in encouraging the public to report this unnecessary garbage.”

The new online reporting tool allows residents to identify the location of the dumping and what materials were dumped. Residents can also upload a photo. Once alerted, the Region and your local municipality can investigate the incident and remove the material.

Commonly dumped items include tires, mattresses, furniture, household garbage, appliances and yard waste. To learn more about waste disposal and how to report illegal dumping, visit the Niagara Region website or call Niagara Region’s Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or toll-free at 1-800-594-5542.

The increasing problem of garbage and trash showing up in all the wrong places can be traced directly to the Regions failed policies.

By abdicating their long standing and historic municipal responsibility to pick up and dispose of garbage or even by providing a place of self-disposal, they have secretly garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars in onerous fees on the back of its citizens.

To cover their failing policy they now take the autocratic route of punishing their citizens and offering rewards to induce citizens to turn in their fellow citizens!
And just what are the fines for? The fines are to punish citizens who are trying to avoid the Region’s onerous fees in the first place!

The secret society known as the Niagara Regional Government will not tell you how much money they have garnered by choking off the flow of garbage to the dump. Nor will they tell you the cost of removing garbage and trash from our ditches, not to mention the cost to citizens burdened with other people’s garbage and trash on their private property.

Regardless of how the garbage and trash finds its way to its final destination, and it will find its way, the fact remains that this whole exorcize is predicated on one more stinking money grab.

During this current Regional Council we made a presentation which included a multi-year collection of 1150 pictures of illegally dumped garbage.
That number of pictures has since increased to over 3200 pictures. In eight months of 2013 we garnered exactly 1,194 pictures of illegal dumping including serious toxic pollutants such as 12-5 Gallon pails of solvents containing deadly toluene within 3 feet of our water table.

On our last day alone we gathered 126 pictures of illegal dumping indicating that the problem is worsening and that the policies of the Niagara Regional Government are not working.

Anyone challenging our veracity can bring a 32mb USB memory stick and I will exchange it for a memory stick containing 3269 images of illegally dumped garbage and trash.
