The historic War of 1812-era Hull House in Lancaster, New York.

President Madison will be joined by Ebenezer Walden, former Mayor of Buffalo (1838), in providing brief remarks during that event as to their experiences during the War of 1812, followed by a musket salute from a contingent of soldiers from the 23rd Regiment U.S. Infantry.

The Hull House Peace Garden was inaugurated in August 2011, and is being rededicated as the 12th of 23 Peace Gardens that make up the new Binational Heritage Peace Garden Trail launched by the Binational Alliance and community partners from across the Southern Great Lakes as a legacy project for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

This Peace Garden, designed and created by Master Gardener Cheri Vogel, features local

heritage plants, seasonal flora and two “Carvings for a Cause” of National Weather Service Founder General Albert Myer and Buffalo Mayor Ebenezer Walden, which were dedicated last August.

This event is free and open to the public.  The formal rededication will take place between 2 and 2:30 p.m. followed by a reception, Hull House tours, self-directed garden and grounds tours, and the opportunity to meet these historic figures from the past.

Peace Gardens launched to date include Victor, Burt, Sacket’s Harbor, and Youngstown, New York, Leamington, Grimsby, Tecumseh, Fort Erie,  Windsor and Colchester, Ontario and St. Mary’s, Georgia.

Eleven more Canadian and U.S. Peace Gardens will be dedicated between August and October of 2012, with a total of 60 anticipated by the end of 2014.  These gardens are made possible through the generous contributions of community, corporate and foundation partners and funders.
