Ontario NDP Leader Joins Call For Ombudsman To Investigate NHS

The province’s New Democratic Party leader, Andrea Horwath, has joined the City of Niagara Falls and numerous citizens across the Niagara region in calling on Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin to investigate the mismanagement of hospital services by the Niagara Health System.

Niagara At Large is posting the NDP leader’s letter to Marin below and also encourages you to visit this site for another story, posted this September 1, that provides more information on how you can contact the Ombudsman’s office with your concerns.

 Dear Mr. Marin,

On behalf of Niagara residents, I am writing to express my deep concern over the state of the Niagara Health System.

For several years, the loss of emergency rooms, key health care services, and infection outbreaks have led to a loss of public confidence in the Niagara Health System. The government’s repeated assurance that health care was getting better in the region – while things were clearly getting worse – only diminished trust further.

The Ontario Government has finally acknowledged a serious deficiency by appointing a Provincial Supervisor to take charge of the NHS. Since the government’s appointment effectively places the NHS under the direct control of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, and your purview, I urge you to undertake an immediate investigation into the Niagara Health System.
Your office has the independence and track record to provide Niagara families with an understanding of what’s not working in the Niagara Health System and how it can be fixed.

Sincerely,
Andrea Horwath, MPP
Leader of Ontario New Democrats

  1. It seems obvious that Mr. Marin who has a solid background re: the NHS,LHIN & HIP would be called upon to further his investigation into our Health System and take it to the next level so that we can return health & safety to the Niagara Region. All people have negatively been touched by the lack of common sense leadership that is in place & continues to erode a system that should be making Health Care fair & equal to all. All hospitals are feeling the terrible effects of the system’s breaking down around them.We place great hope in the findings &recommendations of the Mr. Smith & Mr. Merin !!!

It was just announced that the prov. Gov. is introducing house calls by doctors. We used have doctors make house calls, maybe the Health Minister could explain why they were discontinued. I would be happy to be enlightened if the minister could give the numbers that each area would receive. Are all the doctors happy to comply?

When my mother died in St. Catharines General Hospital because of neglect of duty by the staff there, I contacted Andre Marin’s office and was told they did not address such issues. I am most happy to learn that perhaps now he will take some action.

  4. I just want a political party in Queen’s Park that is not going to continue to deprive me of my hard earned monies by limiting what I can make because of who I am married to and forcing me to abide by ridiculous anti-business, antiprogressive rules that are designed to keep me in poverty. I also want a government that will not cut taxes just for the sake of cutting taxes, because we all know that services including health care and education will be cut right along with it.
