Ontario’s Ford Gvernment  Taking Action to End Encampments, Protect Parks and Public Spaces

Province re-introducing legislation to help municipalities end encampments while continuing to invest in safe and supportive housing

St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe

“I am happy that Premier Ford and the provincial government have taken action that prioritizes the health and well-being of the residents of St. Catharines. The additional funding and focus will help provide the services the most vulnerable members of our community desperately need and the new legislation around open drug use protects the members of our community who know this illegal activity can’t continue in public. The issues our cities face are complicated and all levels of government must work together to build more supportive housing units, expand shelter capacity and clean up encampments.”  – Mat Siscoe, Mayor of St. Catharines

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati

“Vulnerable people need help to navigate drug addiction, mental health and social supports. It’s time for tough love and definitive action to help them achieve that and to restore dignity and safety to public spaces.”  – Jim Diodati, Mayor of Niagara Falls

Ontario’s NDP Brings Proposal To Make It Easier For People To Buy Ontario-Made Products

The Ontario NDP’s Choose Ontario, Strengthen Ontario opposition day motion will give families the power to choose Ontario-made and Canadian-made products at the grocery store, and the right to know when a big box retailer is hiking the price of the goods they rely on.

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP will be using their first Opposition Day (April 30th, 2025) to bring real solutions that strengthen Ontario as the province faces unprecedented economic challenges from Trump’s tariffs.

“It’s simple, we will require grocery giants like Loblaws and Sobeys to clearly label when a product is made in Ontario or imported from the U.S. — so you can choose Ontario and strengthen Ontario. We know that big grocery chains have been making record profits while your monthly bill keeps getting higher – that’s why, we will mandate them to label sudden price hikes. Continue reading

“The Ford government has refused common-sense solutions to cut costs and fees for people in Ontario – and there’s no better example than the cost of hospital parking”, said Gates. “Charging patients, families, and workers a fee just to park at a hospital is just another tax on everyday working people in this province.” Continue reading

Mark Carney’s cool-headed, commanding demeanor brings back memories of ‘Sully’ landing that huge, disabled jet safely in the Hudson River.

When I hear and watch Mark Carney speak, I can’t help but think of Chesley Sullenberger.

Chesley Sullenberger- more famously known as ‘Sully’ – was the commercial airline pilot who in 2009, when the engines on his jet suddenly cut out, did not panic, but was able to remain cool-headed while using all of the skills he had to glide that huge plane to a landing on the choppy waters of the Hudson River and assist all 155 passengers and crew members aboard out of the sinking plane and onto waiting rescue boats alive. Canada’s NDP Leader  On Trump Threats – Water, Health Care, and Indigenous Rights hould Not Be For Sale in Trump Trade Talks

An Election Message fromNew Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh

Posted April 24th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

New Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh

As Donald Trump ramps up trade threats, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh delivered a clear message: Canada’s water, public health care, environmental protections, and Indigenous Treaty rights are not bargaining chips—and New Democrats will be there to make sure no government dares to put them on the table.

Standing with workers in Winnipeg, Singh warned that Trump’s “America First” approach could place pressure on Canada to roll back core protections and exploit public resources.

New Democrats committed to protecting key sectors from being exploited in future trade deals, including:

  • Strategic resources like critical minerals and fresh water
  • Public infrastructure like hydro and transit
  • Health care, pharmaceutical supply chains and domestic manufacturing
  • Charter rights, labour protections, environmental rules, and Treaty rights

“We’ve seen what happens when trade deals are made in secret,” said Singh. “Canadians end up paying the price. Our water, our health care, and our rights are not for sale—and no government has the right to trade them away.”

Singh reminded the Liberals that the NDP forced the government to bring transparency and oversight to all new trade negotiations. That means:

  • Tabling a notice of intent in the House of Commons at least 90 days before trade talks begin
  • Presenting clear negotiating objectives 30 days before negotiations
  • Publishing a full economic impact assessment before any implementing legislation is introduced

“Canadians deserve to know what’s being negotiated—and who benefits,” said Singh. “The days of secret trade-offs and backroom deals must end.”

Singh said the best defence against Trump is building real resilience at home—by expanding public power, lowering costs, and creating good jobs so working people aren’t left carrying the weight.

His plan centres on a stronger East-West energy grid, using Manitoba’s clean power to strengthen the Prairies, connect the North, and build an economy we control—together.

Singh closed with a message to voters: “If we want to protect what makes Canada, Canada—we need to stop trading it away. That starts with drawing a line— and sending New Democrats to Ottawa to hold it.”

What To Do With Homeless Encampments? Poilievre Announces His Plan To Empower Police To “Shut Down Tent Cities”

There Poilievre Goes Again, Channeling Trump On a Complex Problem That Could  and Should Be Treated With Less Force and  More Humanely

A News Commentary by Doug Draper

At a campaign stop in Hamilton this April 23rd, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre began his remarks with a boast that he has received endorsements from a number of police associations across Ontario including those in Toronto, Durham, Peel, Barrie, and Sault Ste. Marie.

These  endorsements, Poilievre suggests, are in no small way due to  his pledge to get tougher on crime and to put an end to what he has repeatedly called a ‘lost Liberal decade” of “easy bail and soft-on-crime policies.”

Then Poilievre got right down to some of that tough talk that is sure to please his right-wing base, if not others, on how he will deal with the growing numbers of homeless people across our region and the rest of the country who are huddled down  in encampments – Continue reading

On This 55th Anniversary Of Earth Day, Let’s All Pledge To Be ‘Part Of The Solution’

A Brief Earth Day Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted this Earth Day, April 2025 on Niagara At Large

Our earth, photographed for the first time by astronauts orbiting the moon in late 1968

The very first Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970 in the wake of seeing that first iconic photo taken by astronauts orbiting the moon of our earth – the one and only oasis in the universe that we know, to this day, that we have to live on – glowing like a jewel in the vast darkness of space.

That first day ballooned into tens-of-millions of people around the world, including in Canada and the United States, rallying for more action on the part of ourselves and our governments to protect and preserve the life-sustaining resources of this precious planet.

In the wake of the grassroots movement spawned by Earth Day 1970, we saw governments in Canada and other regions of the world create whole departments dedicated to protecting the environment, and pass legislation to better care for the quality of our water and air. Continue reading

Pope Francis Was One Of The World’s Most Powerful Voices For Climate Action

The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all.” – from Pope Francis’s 2015 Papal Encyclical

Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.

I am not a Catholic, nor am I, in any real way at all, a church goer.

But you don’t have to be both or either of those to hold Pope Francis, who died this April 21st at age 88, in high regard for the powerful voice he was around the world for action on the climate crisis.

Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Beuno Aires, Agentina and who had a background in science and the humanities, took his papal name from  St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th/13 century Catholic friar who is known by many for his passion for wildlife and the environment, and for embracing a Biblical proverb, paraphrased in more modern times to read; “Where there is no vision, the people parish.” Continue reading

A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus of Timmins, Ontario, in as clear a voice as any, urges us all to keep standing  up to Trump and “stay strong.”

This Easter Holiday weekend, I found the following video circulating on the internet of Charlie Angus who is, in my view, one of most most direct speaking, tell-it-like-it-is politicians serving provincially or federally anywhere in Canada.

In the video, Angus delivers a message all of us who have been paying attention have heard before.

Yet  it is one that, as long as Trump continues to threaten our  sovereignty, our economic welfare and all of  the benefits,  values and opportunities we hold dear in our Canada. we have to keep hearing and keep telling ourselves and others time and time again to STAY STRONG.

Now here is that video of a message he delivered earlier this month. Please give it a listen by clicking on the screen immediately below, and share this post on Niagara At Large with your friends –

A Footnote from Doug Draper – Let’s all continue to purchase as many Made in Canada products as we can and from any other friendly country, and boycott everything Made in the U.S.A. and let’s join, if we haven’t already, the growing number of Canadians cancelling all travel to Trump’s America until Trump completely stops going to war on us.

Stand Strong & Proud Fellow Canadians.  Like The Crocuses In My Garden On The Coldest Of Days, We Will Survive!

A Brief Message of Hope from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted April 17th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Even through the nastiest weather this spring, the crocusts in my garden survived. photo by Doug Draper

One of he sure signs of spring for me each year are the purple crocuses that pop up in a garden in my front yard.

I always marvel at how well these small flowers, as fragile as they appear to be, stand up to almost any kind of weather Mother Nature may throw at them this time of year.  And this year, in particular, they have managed to live on through bouts of heavy rain, through intense winds and snow pellets, and through temperatures that have fluctuated between a bit of warmth and below freezing cold.

Yet, they still managed to survive and, as strange as it may seem, I can’t help but look at them opening their petals each day and say; “If they can do it, surely I will be able to make it through a spring too full of cold and wet weather, and through all of the threats and insults that the orange bully south of the border has been throwing at us too.” Continue reading

Ontario’s Ford Government Unlocking Free Trade Within Canada

Province unleashing billions in new economic opportunity by tearing down barriers to internal free trade and labour mobility

News from the Office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford

Posted April 16th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

TORONTO — As a next step in its plan to protect Ontario by unleashing the province’s economy, the Ontario government is introducing the Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act to unlock free trade and labour mobility within Canada.

This legislation will, if passed, create new opportunities for job creation and investment attraction, supporting economic integration across Canada and cutting costly and unnecessary red tape to help protect and grow Ontario and Canada’s economies.

“For too long, we’ve let red tape and endless regulations hold back our economy, making us vulnerable to external threats, including from President Trump’s tariffs,” said Premier Doug Ford.

“Not anymore. The legislation we’re introducing today (this April 16th) will make Ontario a national leader when it comes to trade between provinces and territories, so we can strengthen and unify Canada and create new markets and opportunities for Ontario workers and goods.” Continue reading

Niagara Falls MPP Working For Staycation Tax Credit To Support Ontario Workers & Businesses

“Given the uncertain economic climate created by the Trump administration’s tariffs, this is a common-sense way to make sure working families can still enjoy a night out or a summer trip, while also investing into Ontario business, Ontario jobs, and the local economy.”                                                                                           – Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates

Ontario NDP Responds To Throne Speech With Calls To Strengthen Ontario

QUEEN’S PARK – In response to today’s speech from the Throne, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP Marit Stiles is calling on Ford’s Conservative government to meet this moment with unity, clear priorities, and a plan to deliver relief and results for the workers who build this province:

“As families face rising costs and the threat of reckless U.S. tariffs from Donald Trump, people are looking to their government for reassurance – for relief, stability, and unity,” said Stiles. Continue reading

Ford Gov. Throne Speech Attempts Re-Brand of Failed Housing, Environmental and Energy Policies

“Ontario must focus on made-in-Ontario renewable electricity, instead of relying on U.S. fracked gas and fossil gas plants or costly, slow-to-build nuclear power plants. A Statement by Phil Pothen, Ontario Environment program manager for Environmental Defence

Toronto– This April 15th’s throne speech was another astounding example of the Ontario government attempting to re-package the same set of counter-productive, environmentally destructive policy concessions to well-connected “friends” as a response to the crisis of the day.

First we were told they were a response to the COVID pandemic. Then they were presented as a response to the housing shortage: the result is that housing starts are in free-fall, worse than anywhere else in Canada. Continue reading

An Open Letter From Canada’s Muncipal Mayors & Councillors To Federal Leaders For Action On Climate Crisis

(A Note from Niagara At Large – To This Date & Time, April 15th, 2025 At 12:15 P.M., St. Catharines Regional Councillor Haley Bateman is the only elected representative  in all of Niagara to join more than 170 municipal representatives across Canada in lending  her name to this Open Letter. How Disappointing Is That?)

Here Is The Open Letter  to Canada’s Federal Party Leaders –

St. Catharines Regional Councillor Haley Bateman, the only municipal representative in all of Niagara to so far sign an Open Letter to federal leaders urging more action on climate change

To Messrs. Blanchet, Carney, Pedneault, Poilievre, Singh, and Ms. May:

We are mayors and councillors from across Canada, where we represent and serve millions of residents of all political backgrounds.

Like so many of you, we are already feeling the effects of U.S. trade attacks in our communities through lost jobs, uncertainty for businesses, and increased costs of daily living.

Increasingly, we are also guiding our communities through another kind of crisis: recurring wildfires, floods, storms and deadly climate events. We believe this is the moment for Canada to fight back, by investing in national projects that will connect and protect our country from the dual threats of tariffs and climate change.  Continue reading

A Federal Election Message from Canada’s Green Party

A Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large  – Unfortunately, there is probably about as much chance of the Green Party winning more than a handful of seats, if that, than there is that climate change will emerge as a key issue in this federal election. But good for the Green Party for putting a climate plan foreword, which is why I am pleased to post it here.

Now here is the Green Party’s Message on what should certainly be a big issue in this election –

For Canadian voters who care about climate action and want to be represented by leaders who take their responsibility to protect our planet seriously, the Green Party has the strongest policies. Continue reading

Even as we Canadians – quite rightfully, in my view – continue to answer Trump’s threats to our country by boycotting Made In The U.S.A products and by zeroing out any and all plans to visit that country for the foreseeable future, it is important to remember something an American friend keeps telling me.

We applaud the Ford Government pulling U.S. booze off liquor store shelves and cancelling its contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink in response to American economic attacks.

But this week’s  announcement  that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) must adhere to the government’s ban on American companies participating in public procurement processes was largely window dressing.

The announcement will do nothing to end Ontario’s growing dependence on American fossil gas imports, nor stop OPG from buying American-designed nuclear reactors – thanks to large loopholes in the policy. And that’s simply not good enough.  Continue reading

Federal Election News from Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party

Canada’s federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre

A Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – One of the first rules of campaigning in an election is to make sure you get the name of the community you are campaigning in right.

On that score, Poilievre gets an F for at one point during his address saying that he was in Welland when, in fact, he was speaking at a shipyard along the Welland Canal in a neighbouring Niagara municipality of  St. Catharines, Ontario.

After his prepared address, which was peppered with the usual ‘lost Liberal decade’ slogans, Poilievre (as per usually during his stops in this federal election race) only took four questions from the media.

One of the questions came  from a CBC reporter who asked him why he was only taking four questions from the media. Was he afraid to take more, the reporter asked.

“No,” Poilievre quickly resplied before repeating all of his usually talking points about how broken Canada is under 10 years of Liberal government and how a Conservative government would “bring (Canada) home” again with Canadian flags waving proudly above. Continue reading

It’s been particularly tough these past three or four months, but there is also so much that we Canadians can feel proud of in the wake of all of the threats and all of the damage Trump is still trying to do to our country.

Let’s continue to stand together in the face of the bully south of the border by purchasing as many Canadian products as we can and by boycotting ‘Made In The U.S.A.’.

Don’t Despair. In People Power (and a little help from our canine friends) There Is Hope!

“Your voice is your power. Don’t let anyone take away your power. Now is the time to stand up. Now is the time to speak out.” – Kamala Harris, former U.S. Senator, Vice-President and Democratic presidential candidate

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted April 8th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

On of my favourite photos from hundreds of rallies that took place this past April 5th against Trump and his dangerous and destructive agenda

With all of the bad going down these days around ‘King Trump’, it is easy to fall into a state of despair.

I think that is a big part of his game plan though, to the extent he has any kind of a coherent plan beyond whatever nonsense he reads on his smart phone while sitting on his golden throne in the middle of the night. It is to bum us out and grind us down to a point where there is little or no strength left and resistance to what he and others in his idiocracy do.

The turnout on streets, in parks and courtyards across the United States (and some cities in Canada) of countless hundreds of thousands people this past Saturday, April 5th to protest what Trump is doing to unravel democracy and agencies and institutions that provided vital public services, and the threats he is aiming at Canada and other longtime friends and allies around the world transmits a powerful sign of hope.

One of the many rallies in cities and towns across North America this past April 5th.

It should inspire us all to believe that if there is enough of us standing together, there is hope that we can snuff out what Trump and his ilk are trying to do to the freedoms and common good efforts generations of people in the United States and Canada have fought so hard for.

On the American news network MSNBC this April 7th, author, political commentator and network host extraordinaire Rachel Maddow did a fabulous job of highlighting the passion and energy in those ‘Hands-Off rallies’ a few days earlier.

Tariff War Offers Opportunies To Change Consumer Habits With Health Of Environment In Mind

“There are opportunities right now, a silver lining perhaps, for us to have a more nuanced story about the implications of what we’re consuming, including the effect on climate.”                             – Brock University Associate Professor Jennifer Good

Brock University Associate Professor Jennifer Good

Niagara, Ontario – As Canadians continue swapping American-made goods for local alternatives, Jennifer Ellen (Jenellen) Good says the time may be right for conversations to shift from what is being consumed — to how much.

“We’re living in fraught times and in amongst the chaos, it seems like an opportunity to think differently about the stories we tell about consumerism and our planet,” she says. “Sure, let’s buy Canadian, but what about also buying less?”

The Brock University Associate Professor of Communication, Popular Culture and Film studies stories told about the environment and how those stories relate to the relationship between people and the Earth. For example, she has researched the intersection of fast fashion — the rapid production and distribution of inexpensive clothing that mirrors fashion trends — and sustainability. Continue reading

Is Anyone Going To Stop This Madman From Blowing Up The Global Economy?

A Brief Comment from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

Posted April 7th, 2025

The president from hell seems to be getting sick pleasure from wreaking havoc on us all.

I just got through listening to a phone-in program on CBC Radio asking people in Ontario if their money situation is being impacted by the death dive  finances are taking, for the third day in a row, on Wall Street, on the Toronto Stock Exchange and on other global markets  – all because of Trump’s decision to use tariffs to wreak havoc on countries around the world.

A number of people who phoned in to the CBC program said they were losing thousands and, in some cases, tens-of-thousands of money they worked hard for and had placed in investment portfolios.

A number of the callers also said that they are cancelling plans to go on a vacation, to buy a car, a home and, in the case of some who are approaching their senior years or are already in them,  to retire.

One question here –

When in hell are enough members of Trump’s own party going to grow some spine – to put it politely – and stop this madman before we end up drowning in a 1930s-like Great Recession?

Do none of them at least care about what could happen to the lives of those who voted for them? What in hell is wrong with them?

Trump Republicans could get off the crazy train and join Democrats in voting down this malignant narcissistic maniac’s tariff war TODAY!

TORONTO – As iconic Canadian companies like Hudson’s Bay are dismantled and sold off by foreign private equity firms, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced that an NDP government will bring in tough new rules to stop billionaire-backed investors from buying up Canadian businesses just to strip them for parts and abandon workers.

“Hudson’s Bay has been part of Canada since before Canada was even a country,” said Singh. “But now, an American hedge fund is walking away with the real estate while workers are left with nothing—not their wages, not their severance, not even a thank you. A sign from the Buffalo, N.Y. Hands-Off Rally.

Even as we Canadians rightfully show our anger against the threats Trump and his followers continue to make against our country, we should remember that there are many Americans, including our neighbours in Buffalo, N.Y., who also oppose the awful damage rump is working to doing on their country and ours..

That is why t is important for Canadians and Americans who oppose Trump’s reign of terror to show support for each other, just as citizens from the Buffalo area did days ago when they lined up on their side of  the Niagara River near the Peace Bridge, waving Canadian flags so people on our side could see.

This April 5th, 2025, thousands of Buffalo area residents also joined the giant ‘Hands-Off’ rallies countless hundreds of thousands of  fellow citizens were participating in across their country in what will hopefully be the beginning of a nation-wide movement to stop Trump and his rancid march for autocracy and fascism.
