Last week Mark Carney, having won the Liberal Party’s leadership election, became Canada’s Prime Minister. And it looks possible that he may hold that position for a while. Not long ago the Liberals seemed headed for an electoral wipeout, but they’ve seen an amazing surge in the polls.

The secret behind that surge is, of course, Donald Trump, who has not only imposed tariffs on Canada without any justification but keeps doubling down on his completely insane demand that Canada become the 51st state.

Premier Ford says he will tear up Ontario’s expensive contract for Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite service in the wake of Donald Trump’s unhinged attacks on our economy. And thanks to Doug Ford, American wine and bourbon is gone from our liquor stores.

He  has also ordered the Ontario Public Service to go through the province’s contracts “with a fine tooth comb” to find other U.S. contracts that can be axed. Niagara Falls, Ontario  – The Niagara Falls Illumination Board will be illuminating both the Canadian Horseshoe and American Falls in green on March 17 for 15-minutes at the top each hour, beginning at 8:00 p.m., in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

The illumination is carried out each year as part of Tourism Ireland’s “Global Greening” initiative, which sees hundreds of iconic landmarks from around the world lit in green to mark the occasion.  Continue reading →

I have had the pleasure of co-existing with cats and dogs all of my life and I closely watch the birds, squirrels and other creatures, great and small, living their lives in my yard and the creatures at least trying to live their lives in what is left of the open fields, wetlands and forests that we humans have not yet destroyed.

Do those creatures  living in the wild  hunt and kill other creatures for food? Yes they do. But nothing they do is driven by greed, cruelty and hatred.

So I fully agree with Michael Fox’s observation, and it leaves me wondering – Would this planet be better off if we went extinct?

Perhaps that is something we should all think about if we can’t learn to live together peacefully as humans and live in harmony with other life on this miraculous oasis in space called Earth.

Marco Rubio, Trump’s Secretary of State and long-time lap boy was doing his dear leader’s bidding in Canada this March 13th and 14th.

When Marco Rubio, Trump’s recently anointed secretary of state with a long record of kissing the orange man’s ring while he was a U.S. senator, came to Canada this past March 13th to represent this country in a G7 meeting, he said that Trump’s repeated threat to make Canada a “51st state” was not going to be part of the meeting’s agenda.

Then, this March 14th, when entertaining questions from the media following the end of the Quebec meeting between representatives of the G7 countries, including Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, Rubio – or “Little Marco” as Trump used to call him – what did he do?

Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. Ontario Premier Doug Ford continues to punch back at the bully south of the border

TORONTO — Effective this March 10th, 2025, the Ontario government has applied a 25 per cent surcharge on all electricity exports to the United States as part of the province’s initial suite of retaliatory measures to U.S. tariffs on Canada.

This surcharge will affect 1.5 million homes and businesses in Michigan, Minnesota and New York, costing up to $400,000 every day the surcharge remains in place.

“President Trump’s tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They’re making life more expensive for American families and businesses,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario won’t back down. We’ll stand strong, use every tool in our toolkit and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario.”

A few days ago I took a  picture of the following sign prominently displayed in St. Catharines on Bunting Road– one of the busier roads urban roads in Niagara – in front of a headquarters for  UNIFOR, representing an amalgamation of Canadian Auto Workers and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers. in our region of Ontario.

It is one more of numerous expressions of the growing patriotism across our Canada and the anger so many of us feel for the threats that Trump and idiotocracy  are aiming our way.

On this March 8^th day for celebrating the achievements of women around the world, I want to say a few words about two great women I was fortunate enough to meet who were true pioneers for women in Niagara.

The first is Eleanor Lancaster from St. Catharines who left us this past January at age 97 and who was one of the first women to shatter the glass ceiling in what was mostly a man’s world with her success in municipal politics, including serving with honour on Niagara Regional Council from 1982  to 1991. After another week of Trump dumping all over  Canada with false charges of “ripping off” the United States and his relentless threats of taking our country over by economic force, it can leave us all feeling both angry and a  bit down.

But here is something that a friend and long-time reader of Niagara At Large sent me that should surely lift your spirits.

Some Niagara At Large readers may remember that it was just a few weeks ago  that I wrote a commentary applauding a Sobeys grocery store outlet off Glendale Avenue in south St. Catharines for partnering with a group of animal assistance volunteers to raise some funding to support  their efforts  to find good homes for abandoned dogs.

As I said in that commentary and I will say it again here, I am not in the habit at all of giving free plugs to private businesses unless they are doing something exceptional for the common good of the community at large.

That said, Sobeys – an all-Canadian grocery store chain founded in Nova Scotia more than a century ago – has done an exceptional job at all of its more than 1,500 stores  across the country in joining the effort so many  Canadians citizens are making to use the power of their pocketbooks to buy products made in Canada during this potentially destructive trade war Trump has launched against us.

Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus lashes back at Trump’s tariff war against Canada

Shortly after Trump launched his totally unjustified tariff war against Canada on what has come to be known as Tariff Tuesday on March 4th, 2025, Charlie Angus, a federal NDP MPP for the Riding of Timmins-James Bay in Ontario, delivered an address that I think articulated anger that I and many of my fellow Canadians felt and still feel today.

“Donald, we (Canadians) are nice people but you have really poked the polar bear,’ said Angus as he directly aimed some of his words at Trump.

“What we learned from Trump is that there is no normal anymore with the United States,” Angus added. “We have to build an economy for Canadians. We have to diversify our markets, and we have to build a Canadian economy that is resilient within Canada, so that no matter what that convicted predator from Mar-a-Lago threatens us, we are able to withstand the pressure.”

Trump keeps threatening to take over Canada.

Donald Trump has launched an economic war on Canadians and has pledged to annex Canada as the 51st state, but a third of Conservatives think Donald Trump is pretty darn swell, according to an Angus Reid Institute poll released this  March 4th, 2025.

Among Conservatives, 32 per cent have a favourable view of the U.S. president. Only six, three, and two per cent of Liberals, New Democrats, and BQ supporters, respectively, have a favourable opinion of Trump.

Among non-Conservative Canadians, a very unfavourable view of Trump is near-unanimous, held by 89 per cent of Liberals, 94 per cent of New Democrats and 92 per cent of BQ supporters. Continue reading →

But this March 4^th, rapidly becoming known as ‘Tariff Tuesday’ because of the harmful tariffs on Canadian products that Trump has now slapped on us, the newly re-elected Premier of Ontario didn’t take long to hit back.

To be fair, there are some efforts to explain what’s happening that go beyond Trump’s personal pathology.

Some Canadians think Trump covets their mineral wealth. If you need any more proof that the United States is giving the finger to Canada and to other free and democratic countries around the world that it once embraced as friends and allies, this past Friday’s February 28^th meeting  Trump and his toady JD Vance staged with  White House guest and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be it.

Trump, his face turned from orange to red, yells at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zewensky that he should show him more respect and “be thankful.”

That shit show of a meeting, which drew applause from Putin’s Kremlin – one Kremlin spokesperson praised Trump’ and Vance for their “smack down” of Zelensky, who he referred to on social media as an “insolent pig” – was a stark message to Ukraine, to Canada and to all other freedom-loving countries that have supported Ukraine in battling off a deadly Russian invasion, that America is no longer a friend.

Trump’s America has most certainly given the finger to we Canadians  and to all of America’s other old friends and allies and is now on the side of Putin, brutal dictator deemed by the International Criminal Court to be a war criminal, and other fascist leaders  around the world. First the good news.

In little more than an hour after the polls closed yesterday (this February 27^th) in Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s 189 million dollar snap election, all three NDP incumbents in Niagara – Jeff Burch in the riding of Niagara Centre, Wayne Gates in the riding of Niagara Falls which includes Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie, and Jennie Stevens in the riding of St. Catharines – won their seats back.

All of Niagara’s incumbent NDP candidates won back their seats. From lett, Niagara MPPs Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre), Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) and Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines).

In the other provincial riding in our region, Niagara West, NDP candidate Dave Augustyn, as qualified as he is as a former Pelham mayor and Niagara regional councillor to serve in government, was buried in a race against Ford government incumbent Sam Oosterhoff where, for most of that riding’s history, only a Conservative Party candidate can win. The former U.S, President Jimmy Carter on the site of a Habitat for Humanity project, one of many across the United States and Canada were he volutered his work

Once in a while, when I come across quote from a significant other that seems relevant to the challenges we are facing in our lives and communities today, I hope you don’t mind if I share them with you on this site.

This time the words were spoken some years ago by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died this past December at age 100.

They are words that perfectly reflect the decency and humanity of the person who spoke them – a person who , in this dark and ugly age of Trump,  is hard to imagine ever resided in the White House.

And, indeed, they are words that speak to the crisis of homelessness and lack of affordable food and housing, the shortage of primary and emergency health care services  and to so many other challenges we face right here in Niagara and other regions of our province and country today.

For those out there who blow off the fears that at least some of have that we may now be witnessing the death of democracy and the rise of Nazi-style fascism unfolding in Donald Trump’s America in real time, I urge you to not only watch, but give serious thought to a segment of a February 19^th address by Illinios Governor JB Pritzer that I have included below.

It underscores the danger that everyday Americans and that we Canadians living right across the border face from this Trump regime.

I was in a grocery store earlier this February 19^th and saw a good number of my fellow Canadians actively looking for and placing in their shopping carts produce that is made in Canada or some other more friendly country like Mexico or Italy  and leaving anything produced in the U.S.A on the shelves.

At the service desk, I even overheard one  customer say that the store shouldn’t be stocking products from Trump’s United States at all.

On a bitter cold February morning, it was enough to warm my heart to see the number of my fellow citizens using their buying power   against the threats from Trump and his MAGA maniacs to use crippling tariffs and whatever other means they may come up with to take  over or annex our “True North Strong And Free.”  

Let’s Keep It Up!

Let’s keep  doing what we can to deprive Trump’s America of billions of our of shopping and vacationing dollars  because south of the border it is now clear  that money means a hell of a lot more than treating  old friends and allies with a little respect.

Since Trump’s comeback as America’s Reality TV version of a strongman in the White House, I’ve heard and read so many of my fellow Canadians say on radio phone-ins or in one written venue or another that they have decided – at least for the time being – not to cross the border into the United States.

If or when they are asked why they won’t cross the border, a significant number of them say that they are afraid.

I received a text from you and all you wrote about were US tariffs.  That’s all you ever talk about.  Don’t you know you’re not the Prime Minister?

Instead of trying to be PM, why don’t you deal with some of the real problems Ontarians are facing?

Stop trying to privatize our health system.  Put some of the money you are holding back into our public health system, instead of giving it to rich private providers.

Do we really have to keep sprawling over what is left of our croplands , grasslands, woodlands and wetlands to solve Ontario’s housing problem when studies show there is enough land for housing within existing urban boundaries.

In this (February 14th’s) Northern Leaders’ Debate, when we drew attention to Doug Ford’s dismal housing record he deflected by trying to tell us that we “wouldn’t cut down a dandelion to put a shovel in the ground.”
