Losing the world’s trust, and a lot of money too
“America is no longer a reliable ally to the world’s democracies; indeed, between Trump’s turn toward Putin and his talk of annexing Canada and Greenland, we don’t look like an ally at all. “

President Joe Biden meets with Paul Krugman, economist and OpEd columnist for The New York Times,
Last week Mark Carney, having won the Liberal Party’s leadership election, became Canada’s Prime Minister. And it looks possible that he may hold that position for a while. Not long ago the Liberals seemed headed for an electoral wipeout, but they’ve seen an amazing surge in the polls.
The secret behind that surge is, of course, Donald Trump, who has not only imposed tariffs on Canada without any justification but keeps doubling down on his completely insane demand that Canada become the 51st state.
Every time Trump or his minions repeat that demand, they strengthen Carney’s hand against (Canada’s )Pierre Poilievre, the Bitcoin-loving, Trumpy-sounding Conservative leader.

As Trump’s American continues to ramp up its efforts to wreak havoc on Canada’s economy and its threats to make our country a “51st state,” Tim Thompson, a Toronto filmmaker produced a wonderful “Dear Canada” video that should lift all our spirits.
Why else would tens-of-millions of Americans vote into power and continue to support a president, in the name of Donald Trump, who has, for years, threatened our quality of life and countless Canadian jobs with punishing tariffs, and who now threatens our very right to exist as a sovereign nation?

“CBC/Radio-Canada is more than a broadcaster—it is a pillar of our cultural identity and a cornerstone of our sovereignty. For nearly a century, it has brought us together, shared our stories and strengthened our national dialogue. After another week of Trump dumping all over Canada with false charges of “ripping off” the United States and his relentless threats of taking our country over by economic force, it can leave us all feeling both angry and a bit down.

Some Niagara At Large readers may remember that it was just a few weeks ago that I wrote a commentary applauding a Sobeys grocery store outlet off Glendale Avenue in south St. Catharines for partnering with a group of animal assistance volunteers to raise some funding to support their efforts to find good homes for abandoned dogs.

A Footnote from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – Together, we Canadians can win this trade war by purchasing as many Made In Canada products as possible, by shopping and dining in as many Canadian-owned retail outlets and restaurants as possible, by cancelling all visits and vacations to the United States and by boycotting all things American.
A Message from Doug Ford, Premier-elect of Ontario

For those out there who blow off the fears that at least some of have that we may now be witnessing the death of democracy and the rise of Nazi-style fascism unfolding in Donald Trump’s America in real time, I urge you to not only watch, but give serious thought to a segment of a February 19th address by Illinios Governor JB Pritzer that I have included below.
I was in a grocery store earlier this February 19th and saw a good number of my fellow Canadians actively looking for and placing in their shopping carts produce that is made in Canada or some other more friendly country like Mexico or Italy and leaving anything produced in the U.S.A on the shelves.
On a bitter cold February morning, it was enough to warm my heart to see the number of my fellow citizens using their buying power against the threats from Trump and his MAGA maniacs to use crippling tariffs and whatever other means they may come up with to take over or annex our “True North Strong And Free.”

“I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially.” ― E.B. White, the late American author of such beloved children’s books (also read with joy by adults as ‘Charlotte’s Web’, ‘Stuart Little’ and ‘The Trumpet of the Swan’.
Since Trump’s comeback as America’s Reality TV version of a strongman in the White House, I’ve heard and read so many of my fellow Canadians say on radio phone-ins or in one written venue or another that they have decided – at least for the time being – not to cross the border into the United States.
I received a text from you and all you wrote about were US tariffs. That’s all you ever talk about. Don’t you know you’re not the Prime Minister?
