Former Marineland Trainer Voices Concern Over Fate of Animals At The Niagara Falls Amusument Park On Popular CBC Radio Program

A Brief Comment by Doug Draper, followed by a CBC Radio Phone-In Program Featuring Former Marineland Trainer Phil Demers

Former Marineland marine mammal trainer and vocal animal justice activist Phil Demers

With yet another death of a beluga whale reported over the past week, raising the death toll of belugas at the 64-year-old Marineland amusement park in Niagara Falls, Ontario to at least 20 since 2019, how many more might die before the provincial and federal governments finally step in and have the remaining 30 or more belugas and any other remaining animals at the park removed to safe sanctuaries?

This is a question now being asked by animal rights activists and by many others across the Niagara region, province and country as the future of the Marineland park – once billed by its late owner John Holer and his marketers  as the most popular tourist attraction next to the Falls themselves – now hangs in limbo. A Brief Alert To NAL Readers – This Monday Night at 9 P.M., A TV Doc. On The Love Canal Disaster

Posted by Doug Draper, Niagara At Large publisher and a veteran environment reporter for the once independent St. Catharines Standard

Monday, September 8th, 2025

This Monday night at 9p.m., if you get the PBS channel (WNED) out of Buffalo, N.Y. that public broadcast network will be playing a two-hour long American Experience documentary called “Poisoned Gound- The Tragedy At Love Canal”  in Niagara Falls, New York.

That disaster, which unfolded in Niagara Falls, New York in the mid-to-late 1970s, destroyed an entire neighbourhood and wreaked havoc on the lives of hundreds of mostly working class families as toxic chemicals buried under and around their homes oozed to the surface of the ground and leaked into surrounding creeks flowing to the Niagara River and ultimately, Lake Ontario. In Wake of Trump Tariff War, Canada’s Prime Minister Launches New Measures To Protect, Build, And Transform Canadian Strategic Industries

“We cannot control what other nations do. We can control what we give ourselves – what we build for ourselves. Canada is building the strongest economy in the G7, one that is less reliant on foreign powers and more resilient in the face of global shocks. In the face of uncertainty around the world, we are ensuring that our workers and businesses will prosper by building Canada’s strength at home.” – Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney

The global trade landscape is rapidly changing, as the United States fundamentally transforms all of its trading relationships. The effect is profound – displacing workers, disrupting supply chains, forcing companies to rethink where they source their materials and products, and causing uncertainty that is curbing investment.

Canada has the best deal of any U.S. trading partner – yet we cannot rely on our most important trade relationship as we once did. We must build our strength at home.   Continue reading

Shame On We Humans. Because Of Our Lack Of  Care For Other Species, Another Bear Is There For the Killing

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted September 5th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

A Black bear wanders over in the direction of people lounging in a nature park in British Columbia.

If any of you watched CBC’s news program The National  this past September 3rd (or even if you didn’t) there was a short segment at the end of the program showing a black bear wandering into Burnaby Mountain Park in British Columbia looking for food in a place where people were lounging around.

At least one couple is seen, continuing to lay there reading a book or something, as the bear ambled closer and closer in a manner that gave no reason for anyone viewing the video to believe that  he was going to attack, which the bear didn’t.

But that didn’t  matter.

The commentator on The National news program said that because that particular bear, seen in the park before, has become so use to coming near humans, “the plan is to put him down.” Continue reading

Ontario NDP Calls For Garden City Skyway Project To Use Canadian Steel To Stand Up Against Trump’s Tariffs

“Ontario workers have the skills, experience, and dedication to build the Garden City Skyway to the highest standards. This project must be built by Canadian workers, with Canadian steel, as a clean commitment to good jobs and fair opportunities.”

A News Release from Ontario’s NDP Official Opposition Party

Posted September 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

The Garden City Skyway, as it looks taking traffic over the Welland Canal today.

(A Brief Foreword from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – If the Ford government barges ahead with plans to twin the Garden City Skyway crossing the Welland Canal in St. Catharines, then by all means use Canadian steel and Canadian workers.

But rather than build a twin bridge to accommodate more car and truck traffic at a time when we should be moving to more public transit, why not use the however many billions of dollars that would cost on building a new hospital for the southern end of Niagara, building affordable housing and shifting to more renewable energy. We could use Canadian building materials and Canadian workers for those projects too.)

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP and Official Opposition leader Marit Stiles is calling on the Ford government to ensure the Garden City Skyway bridge project is built with Canadian steel and Canadian fabricators.

With the details for the contract still on the table, the Ontario NDP is demanding that Ford make sure public money goes to Ontario workers and Canadian-made steel. Continue reading

Ringing In September With A Song That Will Make You Wanna Get Up & Dance

A Brief One from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

It’s that time of year when the monarchs are gathering for their great migration south

I have never been one of those who views the Labour Day weekend as the end of summer.

There are almost three weeks of summer left before it officially ends on Monday, September 22nd at 2:19 P.M. to be precise.

So enjoy each and every minute of what in September can be some of the nicest days of the whole summer.

Being a person whose life is often accompanied by a musical soundtrack I want to share with you a song that has been going through my mind as the pages on the calendar flipped from August to September.

It is one of my favourite September songs by one of the funkiest  bands of all time, Earth, Wind & Fire. Click on the screen below and I am sure it will make your day a little  happier –

A Brief Note From Doug Draper At Niagara At Large

Posted On Labour Day, September 1st. 2025

This Labour Day, my thoughts go back to the darkest days of the COVID pandemic just a few years ago when our politicians at the municipal, provincial and federal level locked our public buildings up to us like Brinks trucks while employees at grocery stores went on working every day so that we could put food on our tables.

Meanwhile, the billionaire owners of the grocery chains like the Westons, who gave their employees a two-dollar-an hour bonus at first to work during such perilous times, turned around a took that bonus away as soon as they could, putting the workers back to the minimum or near minimum wage level that they have lobbied to keep as low as possible for decades now. To Hell With Trumpland. Let’s Stay Home And Celebrate Our Own Great Land

A Brief Comment by Doug Draper

As of this last long weekend of summer, Trump and his tens-of-millions of MAGA supporters in the United States continue to target our Canada with punishing trade tariffs in the hope that they can bring us to our knees and make us agree to be annexed as a “51st state.”

Let’s continue to stand together with the pride and strength we have shown for the past seven months of this hostility coming from our neighbours and former friends to the south by waving our flag high and by saying no to travelling to the United States and purchasing anything that is produced there. Niagara Regional Council Members Critical Of Loan To NPCA Are Being Short Sighted

A Comment from Niagara resident and citizen activist and conservationist John Bacher

Posted August 29th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

It was a great delight recently to learn that the increase surge in Canadian visitors has caused the revenues of the Niagara Parks Commission to increase, despite a decline in American tourists to our region.

This, however, makes more vexing, the hostility of some Regional Council members to making a loan for repairs to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s (NPCA) s interpretive facility at Balls Falls. Continue reading

This Time, At Least, A Majority Of Niagara Regional Councillors Side With Struggling Homeowners Over Developers

A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 28th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Doug Draper, back in the days when reporters in Niagara still worked in newsrooms (this newsroom, the Burgoyne family’s at the once-proud Standard in St. Catharines. file photo,

My mother always used to counsel me to not be one of those people who just go through life complaining all the time, but to go out of my way, when I feel I legitimately can, to “give credit where credit is due.”

It is advice that in all my years as a journalist I have tried to take to heart, although I’m sure that some of those I’ve written about will never believe it.

With that, I believe I have gone out of my way to give credit to those who have deserved and in that spirit, I want to give a shout out to a majority on Niagara’s regional council who, earlier this August, did not cave in to what appeared to be a fair amount of pressure to grant a private developer 40 million of  our municipal tax dollars for a sprawling, $1.8 billion residential complex along the shores of the Welland Recreational Canal, across from Merritt Island in Welland. Ford Government’s Refusal To Fix  Bill 9 – Municipal Accountability Act – Won’t Protect Communities

Niagara Centre NDP MPP Jeff  Burch, questioning Ford government in Ontario legislature

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Municipal Affairs critic Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre) is calling out the Ford government for refusing to fix the flaws in Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability Act, after Conservative members voted down key NDP amendments at committee this August 26th, 2025.

“This past August 26th, in committee, we saw again how unwilling this government is to listen, and to fix the serious flaws in Bill 9, the Municipal Accountability

“We put forward a simple, fair amendment: let an independent judge, not political colleagues, rightfully decide when a councillor’s behaviour is so egregious that removal is necessary. Government members voted it down. Expecting a council to reach a unanimous vote to expel one of their own is unrealistic, and leaves municipalities stuck with the same dysfunction Bill 9 is supposed to address. Continue reading

Ford Government Ignores Public & Official Party Opposition Calls For Passing An Ameded Bill 9 – Municipal Accountability Act

Creating a safe working environment requires clear workplace protections. This is the third iteration of this legislation. It’s been debated for three years. Haley Bateman, a Councillor with the Region of Niagara and advocate with Women of Ontario Say No, is raising alarms about the implications of this approach. She warns that without key amendments; the legislation could make municipal politics a far more dangerous place to work and participate in. Continue reading

50 Years Of One Of The Greatest Rock Songs Of All Time

A Brief Tribute to Bruce Springsteen and the song that made him the ‘Boss’

By Doug Draper

Posted August 25th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

“Baby this town rips the bones from your back. It’s a death trap, a suicide rap. We got to get out while we’re young.”

Bruce Springsteen was already rising rapidly to the top of the pantheon of rock stars when on August 25th, 1975, he and his E Street Band released a song he composed that would forever brand him in the world of popular music as ‘The Boss’.

That song was the epic anthem ‘Born To Run’ and within a matter of weeks of its climb to the top of the Billboard charts, Springsteen was on the cover of both Time and Newsweek magazines – a feat that was virtually unprecedented for any popular musician before or after – with music writers hailing him at the same time as ‘the new Bob Dylan’ for the depth of substance and imagery in the lyrics of that song and others he had penned. Hey Mayor Diodati – Need More Money For The New Niagara Falls Hospital? How About Getting It From Your Pal Doug Ford

Municipalities In The South End Of Niagara Should Have A New Hospital Of Their Own

A News Commentary by Doug Draper

Posted August 20th, 2025 on Niagara At Large!

The new Niagara Health Hospital – questionably being referred to as the ‘South Niagara Hosptial’ – under construction in Niagara Falls.

With the exception of Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati’s own council and that of Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin, it seems that four other municipalities in Niagara’s south end – Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie and Wainfleet – are so far being less than committal when it comes to paying up, what between all six of them, would total $72.5 million for the construction of a new hospital in Niagara Falls.

To the four south Niagara municipalities holding out, Diodati, who also serves as co-chair for the new hospital’s fund raising campaign, was recently quoted in a local newspaper saying; “I’m just pleading with everybody to prioritize this. Give what you can now with a commitment to help out more as you’re able because (this hospital) will touch every one of our lives at some point, and we’re going to be glad that we did it.” Continue reading

Lyrics by Joni Mitchell, from the song Woodstock

A Brief Note from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 14th, 2025

I find myself needing a little escape from all the news because, to be quite honest about it, I am on the verge of burn-out – and I am not just talking about  the extreme heat we have been suffering through lately.

So in my mind, I am going to journey back to a sprawling farm pasture in a rural community called Bethel, New York where on August 15th, 16th &17th 1969 the musicians who provided the soundtrack for the counter-culture of the 1960s gathered for that era’s high-water mark at the Woodstock Music & Art Festival.

What unfolded on that pasture land in the Catskills of New York in the summer of ’69 was, in so many ways, a fantasy, and a very fleeting one at that. After those three days of “peace and music,” as they were called at the time, it  mostly all went downhill from there. Continue reading

Fires, Heat, And The Fight For Climate Action

“Climate action has been pushed down on the government’s list of priorities. Not because the crisis is any less urgent, but because Donald Trump’s return to the White House has thrown global politics and trade into turmoil.”

A Message from the Green Party of Canada

Right now, thousands of Canadians are under evacuation orders or fire bans. Newfoundland is facing the worst wildfires we’ve seen there. In B.C., wildfires have cut off towns and knocked out power. In P.E.I., temperatures hit levels not seen in decades, while Ontario and Quebec sweltered through dangerous heat waves.

We know what’s driving this. And we know it will only get worse unless governments stop propping up the fossil fuel industry and start acting like the emergency is real.

But here’s the hard truth.

Among Canada’s largest 10 airports, only Quebec City’s Jean Lesage airport saw a July increase in Canadians returning from the United States compared to the same month in 2024. The largest drop was at Edmonton airport where trips by Canadians returning from the United States was down 40 per cent. Continue reading

Please Stop Calling It The ‘South Niagara Hospital’ – Because IT IS NOT A Hospital For Niagara’s South End!

South Niagara Needs A New Hospital Of Its Own

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 12th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

During a recent walk down the main street of the South Niagara community of Ridgeway in Fort Erie, I noticed that a number of stores had signs in their windows that read; “Save Our Hospital.”

I found myself responding to one of the store owners by saying; “As someone now living in the North end of Niagara but who grew up in Niagara’s south end, I fully support you. However, I am afraid that horse left the barn a long time ago.”

What I met by that is that over the past 12 years since Niagara Health, the organization Ontario’s former Mike Harris government founded in 1999 to amalgamate all of our region’s hospital services under one body, opened the super hospitals in west St. Catharines, hospitals in Niagara’s south end got short changed. Why Is Housing So Expensive? Follow The Money

“If a young couple in Ontario are trying to buy a house, they’re not just competing against other Canadians who are also trying to buy a house, they’re competing with global capital. Who loses in that scenario?”

A Message from the Green Party of Canada

Posted August 11th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Last month, we asked what “nation-building” means to you. Hundreds of people across Canada took the time to respond. Housing emerged as a clear, urgent priority, especially among younger respondents.

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: The housing crisis is all about supply and demand. Just build more, and the problem will go away.

While there is some truth to that, the reality is more complicated.

For decades after WWII, Canada’s federal government built tens of thousands of non-market homes every year. Co-ops. Public housing. Truly affordable housing. That consistent federal investment in social housing ended in the early 1990s, with the rise of neoliberalism, a belief that governments should do less, and markets should do more.

So yes, Canada does have a social housing supply problem, but that’s not the #1 reason why home prices and rents have become so unaffordable for so many of us.

What is the #1 reason? The ultra-wealthy have way too much money. That’s why the housing crisis is happening all over the world, not just in Canada. When billionaires accumulate more money than they can spend, they invest it in assets that produce “passive income” — like buying up housing to collect rents, or buying up mortgages to collect interest.

If a young couple in Ontario are trying to buy a house, they’re not just competing against other Canadians who are also trying to buy a house, they’re competing with global capital. Who loses in that scenario?

Worse still, instead of confronting the real reasons housing is unaffordable, too many politicians and pundits choose to blame immigrants. They act as if this crisis has nothing to do with forty years of disinvestment, deregulation, and deepening inequality.

We know better. And so do you.

That’s why the Green Party is calling for:

  • – A return to federal investment in non-market housing at the scale required
  • – Strong limits on speculation and financial landlordism
  • – A progressive wealth tax on the ultra-rich

We’re just getting started. This is part one of a three-part series on housing. In part two, we’ll talk about how Canada could lead the world in modular, climate-smart housing innovation.

If you’re ready to help fix what’s really broken — and stop the excuses — we need you with us.

  • With hope and determination, The Green Party of Canada

Canada’s Prime Minister Condemns Israeli Government’s Plans to Escalate Military Operations In Gaza

Ottawa, Ontario – “Canada condemns the Israeli government’s decision to further escalate the conflict in Gaza.

This escalation will do nothing to end the humanitarian horror in Gaza or the deepening suffering of both the Israeli hostages and Palestinian civilians. Nor will it advance long-term peace and security for the Israeli people.

Canada calls for an immediate ceasefire. Hamas must immediately release all hostages taken during the horrific terrorist attack of October 7; Hamas must disarm; and we must see a massive and sustained surge in humanitarian aid, at the necessary scale. Continue reading

America’s Loss Of World-Leading Brains In the Medical Field Could Be Canada’s Gain

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

Long-time anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is Trump’s main man responsible for slashing vaccine and other medical research programs.

Thanks to their president, Donald Trump, and their screwball of a secretary of health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Americans are finally going to realize their dream of moving away from vaccines and other science-based treatments for infectious disease.

And why would they want to have anything to do with vaccination for protecting themselves against potentially deadly diseases when they can, as Trump once recommended, guzzle down bleach or, just to name a few of RFK Jr.’s remedies, inhale steroids and Vitamin A or simply drink raw milk? Ontario’s Ford Government To Build Gas & Oil Pipelines From Alberta & Saskatchewan

Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan Working Together to Protect Canadian Workers and Achieve Energy Security in the Face of Tariffs and Economic Uncertainty

A News Release from the Constituency Office of Niagara West Ford Government MPP Sam Oosterhoff

Posted August 8th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

From left to right, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe embrace a future for Canada that involves the continued production and burning of ever more fossil fuels. Now they call on Canadians to join them in embracing such a future in the names of responding to Trump’s tariff war.

BEAMSVILLE – This past August 7th, the Ontario government issued a request for proposals to conduct a feasibility study exploring how best to establish a new economic and energy corridor.

This corridor would include new Alberta-to-Ontario pipelines, bringing Western Canadian oil and gas to refineries in Southern Ontario and tidewater ports including a new deep-sea port on the coast of James Bay.

These new pipelines, built entirely within Canada using Ontario and Canadian steel, would help achieve energy security by ensuring ongoing access to Canadian oil and gas for Canadian homes and businesses while also creating good-paying jobs across the country. Continue reading

Donald Trump is hitting Ontario with new tariffs on steel and copper – a direct threat to our province’s industries and jobs. But we don’t have to take it lying down.

One of the smartest ways to fight back? Stop holding back renewable energy.

By unleashing  low-cost solar and wind power , Ontario can not only meet this rising demand — it can protect jobs in our own steel and metals sectors.

Canada and Ontario Investing More Than $1.7 Million to Support Honey Beekeeping Operations

Investment will help hundreds of beekeepers improve their honey bee colonies and boost competitiveness in the face of U.S. tariffs

“Honey bees in Ontario provide valuable pollination services to many of the crops we eat. High winter losses, new pests, and the threat of treatment resistance have made recent years challenging for Ontario’s beekeepers. The Honey Bee Health Initiative has been a valuable support for beekeepers who are having to change their practices or invest in new equipment to meet the emerging challenges. It is helping to enable beekeepers to continue to provide the critical pollination services to the broader agricultural and horticultural community here in Ontario.”                                                – Stephen Moore, President, Ontario Beekeepers’ Association

An Appalling Case Of Animal Cruelty Unfolds In Niagara

In total, eight horses were targeted in this act of cruelty.”                   – from a report by the Niagara Regional Police

A Brief News Commentary by Doug Draper followed by a Niagara Regional Police report and a story from CBC

Posted August 3rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Niagara, Ontario – We have had some pretty terrible acts of animal cruelty take place in Niagara in recent times, from puppies left to die on the side of a road to a dog dying  in an abandoned apartment after every scrap of food and water, including every drop it could lap up from a toilet bowl, was gone.

As awful as those cases and others like them are – and the one involving that poor dog trapped in the apartment continues to haunt me – nothing prepared me for the news this August 1st that sometime during the overnight hours of this past July 30th or July 31st one or more individuals entered a horse ranch in south east rural Welland and shot to death one horse and cut or stabbed seven others.

I have long ago come to the conclusion that we humans are a flawed species with at least some of us capable of performing any cruel act imaginable upon each other or other living species on this planet.  And this latest incident of  cruelty, committed right here in our region on these magnificent animals simply confirms that. ‘What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been’

A Brief One from Doug Draper

Posted August 2nd, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Oh ya, ‘what a long, strange trip it’s been.’

Even Jerry Garcia and fellow members of his band, The Grateful Dead, who wrote that lyric in 1970 for a song called ‘Truckin’, could never have imagine what a long, strange trip we would be living through  today. I don’t care how many hallucinogenic drugs they were on.

This weekend marks the 60th anniversary of The Grateful Dead, one of the most popular bands that came out of the counterculture in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighbourhood in the mid-to-late 1960s, and the city is holding a festival in their honour.

So for all of the ‘deadheads’ out there (and by deadheads I don’t mean Trump supporters but the name adopted for long-time fans of the band), here is the song where that lyric came from.
