Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce CEO Misha Balsma

Niagara, Ontario – The Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce (GNCC) has urged the Government of Canada to intervene in the Canada Post strike.

The GNCC’s request has been echoed by other Chambers of Commerce across the country, including the Canadian and Ontario Chambers.

The strike has now shut down operations at Canada Post for more than two weeks. The Chamber is urging the government to intervene and resolve the dispute fairly, and to restore mail service immediately. Continue reading →

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario — The Ontario government is giving the greenlight to Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) to redevelop the Toronto Power Generating Station (TPGS) into a five-star boutique hotel near the brink of Niagara Falls, which will create good-paying, sustainable jobs and boost local economies in the region.

Seems it’s not good enough for the City of Thorold to already have two McDonald’s fast food outlets located just a few minutes’ drive away from its downtown area.

Of course, the McDonald’s outlets I am referring to are all located in neighboring St. Catharines – one on St. David’s Road across from the Niagara Region headquarters, and the other below the Niagara Escarpment on Glendale Avenue across from the Penn Centre shopping mall – and Thorold, for the 40 some odd years I have been living here, seems to have this thing about not feeling whole as a municipality unless it has its own Post Office, Beer Store, LCBO (which, in the case of that one, it lost some time ago) and an assortment  of brand name chain outlets like Tim Horton’s and McDonald’s. An October 2016 cover of a New York City tabloid newspaper, Trump’s old home town. Didn’t matter what he said on that Access Hollywood tape. Tens-of-millions of Americans, including women and Evangelicals Christians voted for him to be their President anyway.

“Yeah, that’s her with the gold,” says then, first-time U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump as he is about to cross paths with young woman. “I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful (women) — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. … Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”                                    – from that infamous  Access Hollywood tape, recorded in 2005 and released by some anonymous source just one month before the 2016 U.S. presidential election which Trump won.

Weren’t these words something to behold, especially coming out of the mouth of a future President of the United States.

In its choice of Presidents, America has gone from the soaring eloquence of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “you have nothing to fear but fear itself” and John F. Kennedy’s  “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” to the likes of misogynistic garbage.

How far can you sink? It’s almost enough to have you joining the anti-science wing of Trump’s MAGA cult and throwing out Darwin’s whole theory of evolution.

There was a time when the surfacing of anything remotely close to trash talk like this, coming from the mouth of someone seeking high office, would blow up a political career. Continue reading →

Ontario Premier Doug Ford seems to have no problem spending our tax money as if there was an endless supply.

A Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Funny things when politicians are spending someone else’s money – meaning ours. Many of them, to use that old cliché, have a habit of spending it like drunken sailors.

One of the interesting things that too many voters either don’t seem to be aware of or don’t  care to give enough consideration to is that politicians on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border who are on the conservative side of the ledger  and who parade themselves as being better financial managers, have a long record of spending us into as much debt and often even more than their liberal counterparts.

That brings me to the Ford government in Ontario that, as of last year, has racked the net debt fof the province up to a stunning amount of more than $400 billion. – leaving even the highly conservative Canadian think tank, The Fraser Institute, calling Ford’s spending habits so “irresponsible,” that if they continue, they will leave Ontario residents facing some of  the highest income tax rates in North America. Patrick Robson, a model public servant and teacher who cared passionately about the community and protecting and preserving what is left of our natural heritage.

In 1971, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the Man and the Biosphere Program.

A decade and a half later in 1987, Patrick Robson stepped into the role of Community Development Planner for the Niagara Escarpment Commission.

Following an unprecedented period of at-home learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, similar types of disruptive behaviour spiked in Ontario classrooms, says Natalie Spadafora.

The Brock University Postdoctoral Fellow and her team examined the rate of classroom incivility in elementary and high schools both before and after pandemic-related school shutdowns, and saw a significant increase.

Almost every Second World War veteran I knew as a fellow worker, as a friend or interviewed for Remembrance Day stories for newspapers I worked for are gone now.

For years now, I haven’t met a single one from that war selling poppies and pinning them ever so carefully and with so much pride on peoples’ lapels as they once did outside of stores in our communities.

All I have left are memories of the horrific stories they told about comrades being blown to pieces during what was a do-or-die war for freedom over fascism.

Today, we find ourselves fighting for those democratic rights and freedoms again and we all need to summon the courage to make sure that no one, foreign or domestic, uses whatever stealth means to take those freedoms away.

We need to stand together and remain vigilant  in that fight. Wearing a poppy for a few weeks each year is not enough and may even serve as a shield for some who are working against our democratic values.

What a difference an election can make.

It was just a few weekends ago, when my wife and I crossed the border for a short trip to Buffalo, that people we talked to  in the Elmwood Village area of that city were still feeling hopeful that Kamala Harris would win the presidency in their country and that they would see the back of Trump, once and for all.

In that area of the city, which has had a long history of voting for Democrats, Harris campaign signs were visibly present on front lawns and a local book store continued to sell out of ‘Kamala For President’ buttons and bumper stickers as quickly as they could get them.

This weekend of November 9^th however, on another trip to the same area of Buffalo, just days after U.S elections that saw Trump win a second term as president, people we met at the coffee shops, at the farmers market and some estate sales we attended sounded  pretty down when the top of the election came up. (A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug draper – This past November 7^th, I sat down in front of my laptop at home and tuned into the budget meeting underway at Niagara Regional Headquarters where  once again, and for the third year in a row, it is looking like people across the region could be slapped with a hike  on the regional government side of their property tax bill that is well above the rate of inflation.

And once again, as I forced myself to watch another one of these meetings, the Regional Council left me, as I know it leaves others I’ve talked to in the community, with a feeling n that this is a club, and we, the people,  are not any part of it.

But like millions of people on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border, I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that a majority of American voters chose to put Donald Trump back in the White House rather than elect Kamala Harris as their next president.

This past November 6^th, 2024 and barely more than 12 hours after Trump was declared the projected winner of the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris went out on a stage at Howard University where she graduated in political science and economics before going on to earn a law degree at the University of California, she stood before  thousands of mostly young people and delivered a concession speech with a dignity and grace that Trump has proven, time and time again,  to be totally void of. Ottawa  – We welcome the Government of Canada’s Oil and Gas Greenhouse Gas Pollution Cap draft regulation, which aims to curb pollution from the oil and gas industry. This is a historic step towards holding this industry accountable for its outsized role in driving climate change.

The release of the draft pollution cap rules brings Canada one step closer to being the first nation in the world to put binding limits on oil and gas pollution.

The oil and gas industry is the largest source of emissions in the country, accounting for over 30 per cent of Canada’s emissions. Is this a nightmare I can’t shake off or did this really happen?

Forgive me if I am still trying to process all of this because it seemed to me, as I imagined it seemed to so many others, that the choice in this race for the U.S. presidency could not have been starker.

It was like a choice between wading into a pool of nice warm, refreshing  water versus jumping into a cauldron of boiling oil.

Obviously, the tens-of- millions of Americans who voted for him to take back one of the most powerful offices in the world did not see it that way. Lest we forget, he told them from the start of his campaign that he was going to be their savior and avenger. In the view of this wannabe musicologist, few individuals in the past 60 or more years has put a greater stamp on popular music than Quincy Jones, who died this November 3^rd, 2024 at age 91.

From music giants like Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald to Leslie Gore (of ‘It’s My Party’ fame) Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and on and on and on, he arranged and produced some of the best recordings in music history.

You can’t make this up. Here is Trump calling Kamala Harris supporters “scum” from a passenger seat in a garbage truck. Hey, Donald. How about swinging by my house and picking up one of those super gaudy pair of Trump sneakers I am dying to get rid of – Doug Draper, NAL

I don’t know if anyone, including Moses coming down from the Mount with a tablet that reads; “Thou Shalt Not Vote For Trump,” can convince members of the MAGA cult or anyone still undecided not to vote for the orange-face monster this late in the game.

But if anyone outside of Kamala Harris herself and some of her strongest supporters, including Liz Cheney and Barrack and Michelle Obama, can get them to at least give deserting  Trump a second thought, I think it might be late night talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel with a special monologue he delivered just days ago.

I have always been a spring and summer person.

The last leaf on the silver maple tree in my front yard that has a habit of being one on the first trees to sprout its buds in the spring and one of the first to drop its leaves in the fall.

Having said that, I admit that fall or autumn, as many prefer to call it, is a beautiful time of the year when leaves start turning various shades of red and yellow. But that only lasts a few short weeks before the leaves wither and die, then fall from the trees when the first chilly winds before winter blow.

Then, as morbid as it may sound, I can’t get the idea of dying out of my mind as my thoughts turn to so many friends and relatives others I came to know in my life who have passed on.

In that spirit, just this past week I discovered what for me is a perfect song for this time of year, written and performed by legendary singer/songwriter Willie Nelson. Continue reading →

Niagara Region – Now into it’s 4th year at Pathstone, ProjectPlaid (#PP), was created to honour the life of Amelia Durocher after we lost her to suicide in 2019. But it wasn’t just about Amelia, says her mother Shanta Rangaratnam, the founder of this campaign.

“It was also about encouraging us all to talk openly about mental health, with the hope that something like this never happens to another family.”

Since 2019, PP has been marked every November across Niagara and culminates on the final Friday of that month, known now as Plaid Friday. I sure do Mr. Premier. You’re my main man!

A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Going back to his earliest days as Ontario’s Premier 2018, Doug Ford has always had a fixation on beer and booze and on making it cheaper and more accessible for people across the province.

Indeed, earlier on there was Ford’s ‘Buck A Beer’ which, at least in one beer connoisseur’s opinion, tasted like “carbonated mule piss” (which had me wondering if this person had ever actually tried carbonated mule piss) and there was his government’s green light to licenced bars to serve customers alcoholic beverages before noon. And now here we see Ford moving forward with his dream of making alcoholic beverages more accessible in convenience and grocery stores.

It is too bad Ford and company hasn’t spent as much time and effort  making quality public health care more accessible to people or building more affordable and convenient public transit systems to reduce the number of cars on our roads and highways or on shifting from climate-ravaging fossil fuels to greener formers of energy.

But after all, priorities are priorities aren’t they Mr. Premier. So raise a glass and down the hatch.

Bike lanes have become the latest political wedge that Doug Ford is using to rile up his base. Ford is ignoring all the evidence that says bike lanes are good for traffic, local businesses, and addressing climate change and is threatening to rip up bike lanes.

Adding an additional lane of traffic will only encourage more people to drive. More people driving will mean more traffic and we’ll end up back where we started, only anyone who chooses to keep cycling will have a much more dangerous commute to work. Continue reading →

A Halloween Message from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

I think that if I had Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wicked Witch from Oz Land show up at my door,  all at the same time this Halloween night, it wouldn’t have me shaking with fear as much as I now am with only five days left before the vote count in the U.S.. presidential election.

With polls in that election continuing to show – for reasons beyond my comprehension -support in that do-or-die  race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris virtually tied, there is a hell of a lot more at stake there than a trick or treat his Halloween night or someone smashing the pumpkin on my front stoop or soaping all the  windows of my car or home..

If Trump wins, it won’t just be the United States, from its economy and democracy to its vital social services aimed at fighting climate change that will be at stake. It will also wreak havoc on Canada, one of America’s closest and one of its biggest trading partners, and on many other allied nations around the world.

So earlier this week, when I first  saw the Trump Jack O’Lantern, or  “Trumpkin” as some call it, it had me almost wanting to run for the hills like that ‘Cowardly Lion’ in ‘The Wizard of Oz.”

On this Halloween eve, I pray that our American neighbours do the right thing when they go to the polls and liquidate this dangerous man the way Dorothy did to the  witch at that creepy old castle in Oz Land.

A Brief Foreword from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Between this announcement and another the Ford government made this past October 27^th that it is extending the reduction on the provincial tax at gas pumps for drivers, it sure is beginning to smell like Ford will be calling a snap election in the not-to-distant future.

With that in mind, is this rebate and the gas tax reduction a way of bribing voters across Ontario with what, after all, is our own money?

And unless I am missing something, will millionaires and billionaires across the province receive one of these $200 rebate cheques too? Can’t their portion go to funding services like health care or public transit?

Extended Tax Cut Would Save Ontario Households $380 on Average

BEAMSVILLE – As part of the upcoming 2024 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, the Ontario government is keeping costs down for drivers and businesses by introducing legislation that would, if passed, extend the temporary rate cuts on the gasoline and fuel taxes for the fourth time, until June 30, 2025.

These extended cuts would ensure the rates remain at nine cents per litre through to June 30, 2025, saving Ontario households $380 on average over the three years since the cuts were first introduced.

Ottawa  – This October 28^th, 2024, mayors and transit board chairs representing urban regions across Canada met in Ottawa alongside transit and community advocates to call on the federal government to work with local and provincial governments to address the funding crisis facing the country’s largest transit agencies, and develop a new, sustainable funding model for public transportation.

Their call for a new deal for public transit was supported by a wide array of stakeholders including transit industry representatives, environmental NGO’s, public transit rider groups, and unions.

• It is still technically possible to meet the 1.5°C goal, but only with a G20-led massive global mobilization to cut all greenhouse gas emissions, starting today
• Continuation of current policies will lead to a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C
• Current commitments for 2030 are not being met; even if they are met, temperature rise would only be limited to 2.6-2.8°C

Nations (around the world) must collectively commit to cutting 42 per cent off annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 57 per cent by 2035 in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – and back this up with rapid action – or the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal will be gone within a few years, according to a new UN Environment Program (UNEP) report.
