NIAGARA– NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) released this statement in response to the U.S. moving to ban Ontario alcohol products:
“Ontario’s wineries, breweries and distilleries work hard to create great products, support good jobs and strengthen communities across our province, including right here in Niagara.
“Ontarians have already shown that when given the choice, they want to support Ontario-made products. Sales of Ontario alcohol have grown significantly since American products were pulled from LCBO shelves, and Ontarians have embraced supporting our local producers, workers and communities across Niagara and Ontario.
“But as these new restrictions take effect, we must provide more support to these local businesses. This means putting Ontario first, with a Buy Ontario First (https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/stiles-calls-buy-ontario-first-strategy-undo-ford-s-jobs-disaster) strategy that uses the province’s purchasing power to support local producers, protect good jobs, and keep more money in Ontario communities.
“When Ontario businesses are under attack, this government should be doing everything it can to have their backs.
“Doug Ford needs to recall the legislature so we can pass a tariff-relief package to support businesses directly impacted by these measures, including Ontario’s alcohol industry and the many producers and workers who call Niagara home.”
