A Brief Comment by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Good for St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens for doing this. I think every MPP in Niagara and every municipal leader across the north end of Niagara, especially in areas of St. Catharines, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Thorold, that were especially hard hit by this near-record flooding rainstorm, should contact the Ford government and do the same.
At the very least, Ontario’s Ford government needs to know that there is a very high cost associated with storms that are becoming ever more frequent and severe due to a lack of action on climate change.
So at long last, let’s make protecting what are left of our green lands and wetlands, and investing in renewable forms of energy rather than building more highways far more of a priority!
A Letter To Rob Flack, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs & Housing from St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens –
On the evening of Monday, July 27, St. Catharines was struck by a devastating flash flood that affected thousands of homes and businesses across the community.
Flooding and water damage ranged from several inches to waist-deep water in residential basements. Residents have contacted our office to report washing machines floating, personal belongings destroyed, and furniture ruined.
Public pools, libraries, walkways, beaches, and roads were also closed due to flooding, while emergency crews worked tirelessly to support residents and respond to dangerous conditions.
In light of the severity of this extreme weather event, I am asking the Government of Ontario to consider making St. Catharines residents and business owners who experienced flooding during the July 27, 2026 storm eligible for assistance through the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program. Environment and Climate Change Canada warning preparedness meteorologist, Peter Kimbell, confirmed that the storm resulted in flash flooding.
The damage experienced across our community has been significant, and many residents now face substantial cleanup, repair, and replacement costs – many of whom are lower income families and seniors on fixed incomes.
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter further and work together to ensure affected residents and businesses receive the support they need to begin recovering. Sincerely, Jennie Stevens, MPP for St. Catharines
