Trump’s Tariff War Against Canada Begins This February 1st

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Well the Orange monster in the White House has done it.

This January 31st, 2025 Trump made it official that a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods crossing the border into what now passes as the United States will begin this February 1st, 2025.

Why? Well, in large part, according to him, Canada has “treated the United States very, very badly” and has been a source of large quantities of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs that are “killing millions of American people.”

Never mind that these charges are bullshit.

Stop crossing this bridge. There are other more friendly regions of our country and the rest of the world that we can visit.

The bottom line is that this is one hell of a way for  the United States to treat a country that has been a trusted friend and ally through two world wars and through numerous other crises, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks more than two decades ago when Canadians took a chance and  allowed passenger jets from U.S. air space that could have been piloted by terrorists to land at our airports and to welcomed the stranded passengers – many of them Americans – to sleep in our homes.

And now this is the way Trump and the more than 70 million Americans who voted for him in this past November’s presidential election pay us back.

That is not the conduct of a friend. It is the conduct of a bully and enemy.

Well, I am sure I am not the only Canadian who is now saying “too hell with them” or using words that I would rather not post here at the moment.

It is now time to fight back by supporting our federal government in whatever actions it takes to slap tariffs on American products and by using our own  power as people to stop buying American-made products and stop crossing the border for a day trip, a March break vacation or any other reason.

As a Canadian trade expert said during an interview on CBC television earlier this January 31st, it is also time to move away from the United States as a trading partner and do more of our business with the European Union, which is now our second largest trading partner in the world , and  with other countries that are more friendly to deal with.

Let’s stand up together for Canada as a country and as a people and boycott the United States.

P.S. –  Please excuse me if you find a few typos in this commentary. I wrote this while I have been listening to updates on CBC at the same time, and while I have been trying not to feel too upset.
